Zelenskyy challenges Putin to meet in person for peace talks

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has challenged Vladimir Putin to meet in person for peace talks in Istanbul on Thursday and urged Russia to accept a 30-day truce, in a dramatic turn after a weekend of diplomatic flurry.
His comments came after Donald Trump pressed him to agree immediately to Putins offer of negotiations this week with Russia. Zelenskyy upped the stakes by suggesting the enemies meet personally.
We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy, the Ukrainian president said in a statement. There is no point in prolonging the killings. And I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses.

That seems to say that Zelensky says a ceasefire needs to start before the talks, but is not insisting on the 30 days previously suggested.

(103,694 posts)In a statement late on Wednesday, the Kremlin said its delegation would be led by Vladimir Medinsky, a hardline Putin aide who led the only previous round of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in 2022.

Russias decision to appoint Medinsky to lead the talks suggests it aims to revive negotiations along the lines of the fruitless 2022 Istanbul round, which included maximalist demands such as limiting Ukraines military and blocking it from rebuilding with western support terms Kyiv has rejected as unacceptable.
Notably, the Kremlin is not sending its two most senior diplomats, Yuri Ushakov and Sergei Lavrov, who have previously taken part in multiple high-level talks with the US in Saudi Arabia.
