New Jersey mayor arrested at ICE detention center where he was protesting, prosecutor says
Source: Washington Post
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested Friday at an ICE Detention Center where he was protesting its opening, a federal prosecutor said.
Alina Habba, interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey, said on the social platform X that Baraka committed trespass and ignored warnings from Homeland Security personnel to leave Delaney Hall, an ICE detention facility run by private prison operator GEO Group.
The mayor has been protesting the opening of the facility throughout this week, saying its operators did not get proper permits.
In her social media post, Habba said Baraka had chosen to disregard the law. She added that he was taken into custody.

Yes, Social Security benefits are generally suspended while a person is incarcerated in jail or prison. The suspension typically lasts for the duration of the incarceration and can be reinstated upon release. If incarcerated for more than 30 continuous days, Social Security benefits will be suspended. However, if incarcerated for 12 consecutive months or longer, the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits may be terminated and a new application may be required upon release.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Suspension vs. Termination:
If incarcerated for less than 30 days, the benefits are usually suspended and can be reinstated upon release. If incarcerated for 12 consecutive months or longer, the SSI benefits are terminated, and a new application is needed.
** Reinstatement:
Once released, individuals can apply to have their suspended Social Security benefits reinstated. This process typically involves providing proof of release and contacting the Social Security Administration (SSA).
** SSI Terminations:
For SSI recipients, if incarcerated for 12 consecutive months or longer, their benefits are terminated, and they will need to file a new application upon release.
** Spouse and Children:
While the incarcerated individual's benefits are suspended, their spouse and children may continue to receive benefits as long as they remain eligible.

(18,284 posts)they have good legal representation. It stops after 30 days in jail so anyone with any kind of money would be out before then,
However me, nope. No money for lawyers and Arkanstan does not really believe in legal aide. And the circuit judge sometimes takes a while to make it around to assign bail. But then again as a renter I do not have anything for the bail. SO I would be stuck there until the circuit judge makes his rounds. Sometimes up to 90 days.

(7,971 posts)ICE officers arrested the mayor of Newark Friday afternoon in a violent struggle just outside the gates of a privately operated immigrant detention facility that he had opposed.
About 2:40 p.m., ICE officers in combat fatigues forcibly arrested Mayor Ras Baraka outside the Delaney Hall immigrant detention facility in Newark as a crowd of city officials and immigrant rights advocates tried to encircle him to prevent his arrest.
After a struggle, ICE agents physically dragged Baraka through the gate and placed him in handcuffs before leading him toward the entrance to a building at the facility.
As agents tried to handcuff Baraka, he could be heard, calmly, saying, My hands are right there. My hands are right there.

(7,971 posts)Trumps immigration crackdown will likely create a massive profit for the GEO Group and CoreCivic.
According to the GEO Group, the 15-year, fixed-price contract for Delaney Hall is expected to generate in excess of $60 million in annualized revenues for GEO in the first full year of operations. The company estimated the 15-year value of the contract with normal cost of living adjustments to be approximately $1 billion.
According to Open Secrets, the GEO Group spent $1.38 million lobbying the federal government in 2024, and CoreCivic spent $1.77 million. Much of their focus was the appropriations bill funding the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the budget for ICE.
The day after Trump was reelected to his second term, the companies stock prices soared: GEO Groups by about 41 percent and CoreCivics by nearly 29 percent.

(56,020 posts)Menendez, Baraka had stepped three feet inside the grounds, was told he was trespassing, and he went back to the public side of the fence. The ICE agents then took a phone call, and afterward went outside the gates and arrested Baraka from the public side of the fence. They then roughed up three congresspeople, two women and Menendez. They were not trespassing since they have the right to check out detention facilities. The administration and the RW media are lying about what happened.
There is a Meidas Touch video on it.
