Papal conclave live updates: White smoke signals new pope elected

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Emile (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

The temporary chimney atop the Sistine Chapel again on Thursday morning released a plume of black smoke, signaling that the 133 cardinals working inside had yet to choose a new pope for the Catholic Church.

The cardinals, who broke for lunch and will reconvene this afternoon, are expected to continue casting ballots at the Vatican until one among them receives at least two-thirds of the vote. The release of white smoke, or fumata bianca in Italian, will signify that they've elected a pope, as will the ringing of the bells of St. Peter's Basilica

But i fear it's gonna go backwards. This pope was chosen very quickly... I think conclave would have gone on longer if a progressive pope had been elected. YMMV

VATICAN CITY -- White smoke is pouring out of the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling that a pope has been elected to lead the Catholic Church.

That means the winner secured at least 89 votes of the 133 cardinals participating in the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis. The crowd in St. Peter's Square erupted in cheers. The name will be announced later, when a top cardinal utters the words "Habemus papam!" Latin for "We have a pope!" from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica. The cardinal then reads the winner's birth name in Latin, and reveals the name he has chosen to be called.

The new pope is then expected to make his first public appearance and impart a blessing from the same loggia.
