Rite Aid stores to close or be sold to new owner in bankruptcy

All Rite Aid stores will close or be sold to a new owner in the coming weeks and months as the struggling retailer goes through its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
Why it matters: The Philadelphia-based drugstore chain is looking to sell both its pharmacy business and its stores, according to bankruptcy protection documents.

The big picture: Rite Aid faced a host of problems following its previous bankruptcy, including inventory shortages as vendors played hardball with the company on trade terms.
That "negatively impacted liquidity and prevented the company from replenishing its front-end stock," according to Fitch Ratings analyst Joshua Clark. "The lack of inventory led to decreased sales, particularly in high-margin front-end products, exacerbating liquidity problems." The company has also historically been "significantly burdened by its suboptimal lease portfolio," chief transformation officer Marc Liebman said in a court filing.
What we know about Rite Aid closing stores
By the numbers: The company has 1,240 stores in 15 states listed on its store locator website Wednesday.
California has 347 locations, Pennsylvania has 345 and New York has 178 locations.
The retailer has been closing stores for years before its 2023 bankruptcy filing, which it entered with more than 2,100 locations.

I was just at mine yesterday morning and saw the signs on the door. I hope someone picks them up. Growing up, we used to have a "corner drug store" on my block where we had prescriptions filled but when that closed, I ended up at my current pharmacy, that has been at the same location for at least 50 years - first as a "Thrift Drug", then an "Eckerd's" and now a "Rite Aid". I am within driving distance of a couple CVSes and Walgreens, but those chains aren't doing much better.

(153,381 posts)when they actually closed other Rite Aids around my area. I don't even think that Walgreen's ever picked up any of those since there were already a couple Walgreens within a 5 mile radius.
We do have supermarkets here with pharmacies (e.g, Acme), but there have been several supermarkets that have closed down or were taken over by Acme when the Super Fresh and Pathmark chains went belly up. And I don't know how "full service" they are (most do have vaccine services but not sure of the range of vaccine availability and I have even had my past PCPs not wanting to do vaccines and pointing to the pharmacies and supermarkets for doing that ).

(235,061 posts)But I realize that different areas have different supermarket chains even in different parts of the state. But I got my Covid shots at CVS since they were the first ones which offered it around here - but the local CVS was immediately completely booked so I had to go to the one in the next county. I got my flu and pneumonia shots at the doctor's office, since they offered, but for others I've had to go to the pharmacies.

(153,381 posts)not far from the house I grew up in (which is a couple miles from where I am now).
The little shopping plaza where that it is located used to have a Thrift Drug there years ago that closed well before Rite Aid picked up some of those Thrift Drug retail outlets. We have Giant Foods and Shoprites as well but I'm not in those that much (I now the Giant's has a pharmacy but that store is a bit more far-flung from me).
Other than the Acme, the closest pharmacy to me IS a CVS but I know CVS has been having issues (there are at least 4 that I know of within about a 6-mile radius of me) and I don't know what their plans are for those.
I remember back when I was in college at UMASS - CVS was the pharmacy chain of New England (which was the first time I had heard of it)!

(2,987 posts)They will then swoop in and get them for pennies on the dollar. This is how we've gotten this far with a single hedge/conglomerate/multinational owning hundreds of brands. They want it down to like 5 or so who own everything yet when you see all the different labels and brand names you think they're different. Hell, there's like 3 company's now that own 90% of the 100's/1000's of brands you see on grocery store shelves. We are in the midst of the greatest heist in human history and we as the little guys are gonna pay hard. Worse than we already are. It must stop. It's not Krasnov, it's Republicans period.

(25,567 posts)The store was super clean and the workers all greeted you when you walked in the door. Plus their prices were lower than CVS. I miss it.

(21,768 posts)Luckily I managed to find another pharmacy that is able to fill and deliver my prescriptions.
Rite-Aid was beyond poorly managed.
Rest in peace.

(7,018 posts)Rite Aid went on a spending spree to buy out some rivals and did everything they could to kill off independent pharmacies, but the end result was supermarkets, big box stores and mail order companies picking up the slack.
The smaller they got, the more people had to rely on alternatives.
