Republican concedes long-unsettled North Carolina court election to Democratic incumbent

Source: Associated Press

The Republican challenger for a North Carolina Supreme Court seat conceded last November’s election on Wednesday to Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs, two days after a federal judge ruled that potentially thousands of disputed ballots challenged by Jefferson Griffin must remain in the final tally.

In a statement provided by his campaign to The Associated Press, Griffin said he would not appeal Monday’s decision by U.S. District Judge Richard Myers, who also ordered that the State Board of Elections certify results that show Riggs is the winner by 734 votes from over 5.5 million ballots cast in the race.

Griffin’s decision sets the stage for Riggs to be officially elected to an eight-year term as an associate justice.

“While I do not fully agree with the District Court’s analysis, I respect the court’s holding — just as I have respected every judicial tribunal that has heard this case,” Griffin said. “I will not appeal the court’s decision.”

At last - the "I want to change the rules so I won!" judge has been officially told he's a loser so bluntly that he's accepted it.

Breaking: NC Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin just conceded the election - six months, and three rounds of vote tallies, after he lost.

Our office led the legal defense of this election, pushing back against an effort to throw out tens of thousands of lawful votes.

But let’s be clear - this never should have happened.

There was no sound legal basis for trying to change the rules after the fact. From the beginning, it was an attempt to twist the law to reverse the outcome of a legitimate election.

And it put tens of thousands of lawful votes at risk - including ballots from military servicemembers and long-time North Carolinians who followed the rules and voted lawfully.

This attack didn’t work, but there’s a real risk that other losing candidates might try the same attack in the future.
We will always defend your right to vote - and the lawful outcomes of elections.

I’m deeply proud of the attorneys in my office who fought to protect those votes - and won.

Congratulations to Justice Allison Riggs. The rule of law held. The will of the voters was upheld.

- Jeff Jackson

4. While the AP declared over 4,400 winners in the 2024 general election, the NC Supreme Court was the last.

8 months later and finally a winner declared.
I wonder how much thiis delay and appeals cost the NC taxpayers. Articles says nothing about costs.

While the Associated Press declared over 4,400 winners in the 2024 general election, the North Carolina Supreme Court election was the last race nationally that was undecided.

It was the last race in the entire country that hadn't been certified.

Griffin is a piece of work. He tried to get 65,000 ballots thrown out AFTER the election, but only for his race. Every other race with those same 65,000 voters had been certified long ago.
