Trump appeasing Putin with pressure on Ukraine, Biden tells BBC

Source: BBC

Joe Biden has told the BBC that pressure from the Trump administration on Ukraine to give up territory to Russia is "modern-day appeasement" in an exclusive interview, his first since leaving the White House.

Speaking in Delaware on Monday, he said Russian President Vladimir Putin believed Ukraine was part of Russia and "anybody that thinks he's going to stop" if some territory is conceded as part of a peace deal "is just foolish".

Biden, who spoke as Allied nations mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day this week, said he was concerned about US-Europe relations breaking down under President Donald Trump, which he said "would change the modern history of the world".

In a wide-ranging interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Biden was challenged on his own record on Ukraine as well as his decision to end his 2024 re-election bid late in the race after a stumbling debate performance stoked concerns over his fitness and plunged the Democratic Party into crisis.

"Every generation has to fight to maintain democracy. Everyone, everyone's going to be challenged."

"Imagine if we didn’t have NATO now – what would be happening in the Mediterranean, with regard to activity by Russia and China in the region?"

"It is modern-day appeasement... The idea that if we allow a dictator, a thug to decide he’s going to take significant portions of the land that aren’t his, and that’s going to satisfy him – I don’t quite understand."

"We are not the essential nation, but we’re the only nation in position to have the capacity to bring people together to lead the world.""

"We're about freedom, democracy, opportunity – not about confiscation."

"My dad used to have an expression: ‘Everyone’s entitled to be treated with dignity, no matter who they are, no matter where they’re from.’"

on today, to prevent a criminal from reaching the presidency. They could have increased the number of judges on the supreme court, and although Kamala Harris is someone I admire, and that I feel was more than ready to become president, we have to accept the fact that the USA is a misogynistic society, and the prospect of trump reaching the president demanded hard decisions, a different candidate, and I hate to say this but, a man, should have been chosen.

If Biden was not feeling well prior to the debate that ended up being a debacle for Biden and the Democrats, he should have postponed it. I understand that hindsight is 20/20, but they are supposed to know these things, they are supposed to be able to predict. And the campaign should have been much more precise in the criticism of trump and the republicans, more aggressive.

There are other legal measures that could have been taken to prevent this guy from ever becoming president again, and none were taken. And now, Schumer and the Democrats seem to be sleep at the while, again...this is bad.

with the threat the current admin poses and we are witnessing in real time, i'm shocked and horrified at the nonchalant way that the election was run by our team. The country and the world would be a safer, better place with a Democratic President.

I mean, I keep up with the details of politics every single day yet somehow I totally missed this "crisis" that the media refers to.

Funny how that works...

3 and 8 do not carry the same value.

Russia is nuclear armed so you have to cross the red lines cautiously so as to not trigger a nuclear conflict. But after crossing about 3 red lines it becomes obvious it is a bluff. Once the bluff is sniffed out then Biden should have moved more quickly. But that is mild compared to Trump appeasing Putin for the wrong reasons (not saying that appeasement is ever the right reason). But it is pure crap to suggest that the appeasement offered by Trump and Biden being maybe a little too cautious with help for Ukraine equivalent. They are on a far different scale. Biden saved Ukraine from being overrun by Putin and Russia.

"Security officials reportedly told journalists that several internal organs were missing, including the brain, eyeballs, and part of the trachea. An international forensic expert consulted by reporters said the absence of those organs may indicate an attempt to conceal suffocation as the cause of death."
