US House Republican Stefanik Edges Closer to Run for New York Governor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Republican U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik said on Sunday that she is "strongly considering" running for governor of New York next year, potentially pitting her against incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul.

"New Yorkers, not just Republicans, but independents and Democrats as well, are yearning for a new generation of leadership to bring common sense back to our state. So absolutely, I'm taking a hard look at it, and the outpouring of support has been tremendous. And Kathy Hochul is the worst governor in America," Stefanik said in an interview on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo" broadcast.

Stefanik, 40, a six-term congresswoman, had been the fourth-ranking House Republican when President Donald Trump nominated her to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She stepped aside from her leadership role, but the White House later withdrew her nomination, citing concern about Republicans' narrow House majority, currently 220-213.

Stefanik was then appointed chairwoman of the House Republican leadership, a lower-ranking position.New York has not had a Republican governor since George Pataki held the post for two terms from 1995-2007. Trump lost the state in the 2024 presidential election by almost 13 points to former Vice President Kamala Harris. If nominated, Stefanik would look to rally support from conservative areas in Long Island and upstate New York.

I'm not a big fan of Hochul but Stefanik will make her look like FDR. I can't wait for Stefanik to FAFO that winning the state is going to be a whole lot different than fooling the rubes in her little district.

7. It's not a small district, goes all the way to the Canadian border, we were in District 20, but we got redistricted in 2013

And inherited the moderate Democratic incumbent, Bill Owens, who was from up north. Unfortunately, he retired in 2015, and I went to the meetup to meet his chosen successor who I liked a lot, made GOTV calls for him. But that's how we got stuck with Stefanik and there were protests all over in the beginning. And after she appeared on national TV alongside Gym Jordan during the second impeachment hearing, there were calls for her to resign, billboards went up throughout the district, I used to pass this one on my way home. I obviously vote for Hochul, vote a straight Democratic ticket as do others I know, and I sure hope that this finally rids us of national embarrassment Stefanik for good.

I'm talking about constituents. Her district is a drop in the bucket in comparison to the high population districts. I lived in Canton for a very short time right on the Canadian border and I know it's a very rural, conservative district. With her big rude loudmouth she fits right in and impresses the rubes that vote for her. She started off as a voice of reason and switched up very quickly when it was to her best interest to do so. She has been exposed and now has to appeal to a broader audience.

But I and most people I know would be thrilled to be rid of Stefanik. There was a local Republican meetup early on election night in 2022 and Stefanik took the opportunity to be the first to endorse TFG for 2024.

I'm glad her fearless leader raised her hopes and then crushed her.

She is definitely not a Stefanik supporter. they were hoping for a special election after Elise went to the UN, but that didn't happen. Let Stefanik try for NY gov. Fat chance. She may just end up with no public office at all, which would be very appropriate.

Happily voted for Hochul, I want to see if she gets someone decent to primary her.

I think many in NY are unhappy with Hochul. I’ve been hearing good things about the Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado. If he runs, I would vote for him in the primary and General.

We can’t rely on the whole state re electing Hochul. Outside NYC, we have a disturbing amount of Red. I want the strongest possible Democrat to go up against that Trump boot licker Stefanik. She needs a good humiliating electoral defeat. Maybe she’s running for governor because she knows she might lose her Congressional seat this time. Blake is doing well against her even in my red area of NY-21.
