There’s a fresh spat brewing between the White House and Amazon.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, on Tuesday accused the online retail giant of being “hostile and political,” citing a report — disputed by Amazon — from Punchbowl News saying that the company would start displaying the exact cost of tariff-related price increases alongside its products.

Displaying the import fees would have made clear to American consumers that they are shouldering the cost of President Trump’s tariff policies rather than China, as he and his top officials have often claimed would be the case.

Anyone with common sense would do this if they ran a business. There is a lot of sticker shock about to come down the pipeline, and I highly doubt these companies will want the blame for it. It is a tax.

Are they going after Wal-Mart and Target and every other business that sells imported products and lists the tariff separately? How is that any different from the common practice of listing a state sales tax on a receipt? If you buy something from Amazon now, the state sales tax is listed. Why not the tariff, which is also a sales tax?

People know what their state and local sale tax is so they know about how much to expect. With the trump tax we won't know how how much of the price is retail and how much is trump tax.
I think listing the trump tax will save the retailers a lot of head aches with customers who have not been paying attention. My guess of the number of unaware citizens is about 1/3 of the population.
