Christmas is in the crosshairs as toy industry faces brunt of China tariffs

Source: NBC News

President Donald Trump’s tariffs are threatening to put a crimp in Christmas.

The United States imports as much as 75% of the toy products it sells from China, according to the U.S. Commerce Department, making it one of the industries most reliant on that country’s supply chain. Along with sports equipment and games, it is the fourth-largest import category from that nation.

As a result, toy industry officials are warning U.S. consumers to expect higher prices and fewer choices this year, including for the holidays, as a result of Trump’s tariffs. “Christmas is in danger,” said Greg Ahearn, president and CEO of the Toy Association, the industry’s principal trade group. He said production in China continues to slow every time Trump ratchets up the tariffs on that country.

And it’s happening at an inopportune time. Traditionally, production starts to ramp up around this point of the year for goods to be ready for the fall and winter shopping season, he said.

We're all going to give knitted or crocheted items for Christmas, also baked goodies instead of video games.

Clearly not the intended consequence, but a wonderful unintended one! Less Chinese plastic junk is good for both the environment and for the morals or youth - we need to stop creating yet another materialistic generation.

Santa's been ripping off American children far too long.
Giving them gifts every year.

Santa needs to learn a lesson.
Unless of course he can cough up a nice big bribe for the orange f wad.

All the GOP Christians celebrate the reason for the season not crass commercialism. Right.
Right?

Of course it will hurt businesses. Buy stuff made locally.

There are some in his party who are hoping he will go back.

They do not know Trump very well.

There is a pattern of behavior in Trump that some call belief perseverance.

No amount of reasoning will change his mind.

There is a historical evidence of this.

In the 1980s, he was a USFL owner. The league had moderate success as long as they did compete directly with the NFL.
He and some of the other owners had a majority and moved their schedule to the fall to compete directly with the NFL.
Some feel was to force a merger with the NFL. It failed.
They tried to sue the NFL for being a monopoly but won only $3 in damages.
