Buck on leaving Congress: More to life than 'arguing about nothing and telling lies'

Source: The Hill

Former Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) reflected on his time in Congress and ultimate decision to resign earlier this year in an interview Monday, saying there’s more to life than “arguing.”

“There’s a lot of life out there besides arguing about nothing and telling lies, and so I made a choice to go enjoy what I’ve got left,” Buck said during an appearance on “The Daily Show” with host Jon Stewart.

Buck, who announced his retirement from the House in March, explained that he wouldn’t follow suit with many of his former colleagues who have pushed President Trump’s unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

“I left because I couldn’t tell the lie,” Buck said, when asked by Stewart if he missed Congress or felt as if he’d left anything undone. “[The] 2020 election wasn’t stolen. The Jan. 6 defendants aren’t political prisoners.”

I don’t know why none of these guys will even consider that. Cowardice, I guess

And of course, it is very possible that he couldn't get elected as a Democrat in his district and if he doesn't agree with Democratic policies, he would be a hypocrite, which is what he seems to be trying to get away from.

I am really surprised that more members of congress don't say, "That's enough, I'm done." I am frequently reminded of the movie from 1972, The Candidate with Robert Redford and Peter Boyle. It was the most revealing movie about actual politics that I've ever seen and it is as relevant today as it was over 50 years ago.

Jeremy Larner, a speechwriter for Eugene McCarthy in 1968. I'm not saying his script was based on identifiable actual events...but it's undoubtedly based on experiences he had or things he knew about.

from the 1960s: Advise & Consent, The Best Man, and Fail Safe, all with Henry Fonda.

I especially found The Best Man interesting as some of the political speeches were almost identical to ones we've heard from republicans in recent years. Just change a few words and it's the same republican dogma. Lower taxes, more defense spending, and lots of fearmongering.

18. Yes I saw all three of those, and it is uncanny how the "Best Man"parallels what we do now

When I watched it, I really had no idea they had barely changed over the years. The Democratic party however has gone through many changes, probably because they are more in touch with the actual voters.

Would fare well in a fascist United States like they did in fascist Germany in the 20th century.
