Birmingham councilman with DUI in city car loses election by wide margin
A Birmingham City Council incumbent who had a DUI in a city car last year lost his bid for re-election in a runoff on Tuesday night, Oct. 7.
Incumbent J.T. Moore, who last year was arrested for driving under the influence in a city vehicle, lost decisively in his bid to retain his District 4 seat. Challenger Brian Gunn had more than 67 percent of the vote, 676-323, with 99 percent of the vote in.
Another incumbent Birmingham council member, Public Safety Chair LaTonya Tate, held off a challenge from John Hilliard to earn another term on the council, representing District 9. Tate received more than 55 percent of the vote, 921 to 734, with 99 percent of the vote in.
The runoff also decided who will succeed Carol Clarke, who did not run for re-election in District 8. That seat was won by Sonja Smith, who defeated April Williams. Smith received 55 percent of the vote, 867-692, with 99 percent of the vote in. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin endorsed Smith.
