Jefferson County elections see low turnout as voters question impact

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Election Day in Jefferson County brought decisions for more than 30 municipal races. But what stood out was not who won or lost—it was how few voters actually showed up to cast a ballot.

Preliminary estimates suggest turnout in many races landed between 20% and 30%, leaving most registered voters on the sidelines. In Birmingham alone, where more than 100,000 people are registered, the numbers fell far short of what officials would consider high participation.

Some residents admitted they didn’t feel informed about the candidates. Others said they simply didn’t believe their vote would matter.

Joshua Steele, who lives in Birmingham, said the issues he sees in his neighborhood are serious. “Gun violence. Gun violence and drugs and stuff,” Steele said.
