Judge rejecting Trump's sham IRS lawsuit raises 'the bar'

Last edited Tue Jul 14, 2026, 12:55 PM - Edit history (3)

As U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams effectively divorced Trump's IRS 'settlement' con from anything official or approved by the court yesterday, she also broadcasted to future Trump sycophants a stark reminder that they don't share his conditional immunity from prosecution and consequences for any subversion of the law they agree to carry out for their convicted felon president.

Her 56-page ruling referring the two Trump DOJ lawyers in the IRS scheme which intended to reward Donald Trump and his family with immunity from prosecution as it awarded the president some 10 billion dollars in damages) to their respective bar associations for almost certain discipline; including and up to the loss of their law licensees, eviscerating their ability to practice law; should send a chill through the aspiring Trump toadies who believe their careers will be enhanced by sucking up to the criminal in chief and doing his illegal bidding.

Andrew Weissmann in Lawrence O'Donnell last night:

(excerpt)

___It is remarkable enough that on a Monday, we have a federal judge saying that the sitting acting attorney general who has a confirmation hearing coming up in 2 days has engaged in a bad faith sham litigation. But let me just dispassionately put that in context.

In the Abrao Garcia case, a federal judge found that the Department of Justice and Todd Blanch specifically engaged in vindictive prosecution and that criminal case was thrown out.

What is remarkable about this most recent decision is how much it's in keeping with what judge after judge appointed by Republican and Democratic presidents have said about this acting attorney general.

Todd Blanch seems to have been living in some kind of fantasy world where he as a lawyer is all powerful and completely unrestrained because his hero Donald Trump feels all powerful and unrestrained. But it seems like he forgot about uh the bar association.

Well, I don't know that he's forgotten about it. Um and it may be like as you mentioned like Rudy Giuliani where it comes back and hurts him. We are part of a profession. Um and we do self regulate and we have seen it in action.

I know for many people listening to it that is, you know, small recompense. That is not, you know, absolute justice. But it is something that judges can do to make sure that lawyers adhere to their oaths of office.

As somebody who served in the Department of Justice, I have to say it is particularly disappointing isn't the the right term. It's really soul crushing because you know that Todd Blanch knows better. And for whatever reason, whether it's power, fame, money, uh glory, um whatever reason, he has been found over and over again by federal judges of all political persuasions appointed by all sorts of presidents have found his conduct to be in bad faith.

What is remarkable is that he has a confirmation hearing coming up and it really will be on Republican senators to say whether they're going to condone that kind of activity...

watch: Katie Phang - AG Blanche PANICS as Judge Weighs CONTEMPT In MY Epstein Lawsuit!!

Jul 14, 2026
Acting AG Todd Blanche has brazenly committed violations of the court order entered against him in Katie Phang's lawsuit over the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The judge directed Katie Phang to respond to his excuses and inaction. Here, she walks through her filing in detail, explaining the legal strategy and why Blanche must produce the documents at issue in unredacted form inside the judge’s chambers for the parties to review and why the court should fine Blanche $1,000 a day until he complies with ALL of the court’s order.

...an increasing number of judges have called the administration out for their fraudulent conduct.

This judge had the unique opportunity of sanctioning a DOJ which thought it could use the court to give their criming a taint of legitimacy, and tried to shut the judge out of judgment by dismissing the case. Essentially she had nothing but the conduct of the DOJ to reasonably and legitimately consider.
