stop driving traffic there. learn to copy/paste, screen cap, etc. every time somebody clicks on a tab with an embedded twitter link/image, there's another hit for elon, whether you actually visit the twitter link or not. if a post on DU has a blue box, it doesn't get clicked on by me.

How much "news" do you read on the site formerly known as twitter that is directly actionable by YOU in that it inspires you to think in entire essays and not just repost it elsewhere like an automaton.

All these sites are noise that I block out of my life. This includes bluesky which seems quite popular here.

I get more than enough clever quips and random facts (which may be true or not) from friends or family. Memes don't interest me at all.

DU itself, which is my only "social media," is often too noisy for me. I don't click on posts that are likely to be naked links to other social media sites. When I do by some accident it irritates me. I put people who do this frequently on my ignore list.

I think it's a very serious problem in our society that so many people are lost in the noise, never able to focus in on any single issue long enough to be a force for any meaningful progress.

Smart phones are a large part of the problem. You can't really see where you are or where you are going if your eyes are glued to a smart phone. That's one reason I hope I'm never forced to own one.

Can people even remember what they were outraged about last week? Or the week before? Try 3 months ago. What was the major story sweeping social media that everyone had to have an opinion on?

No one knows, because it doesn't matter.

There was a website I can't remember that used to track, "What you cared about last week" and it traced two years of major social media stories. I'd go through it and sees things I'd totally, totally forgotten about and realize, "Oh yeah, I really did care about that at the time!"

It's fun to shoot the shit (the entire reason I'm on DU), but at the end of the day, 99% of the time and effort spent on social media has nothing to do with anything.

I see positive and heartwarming stories from people all over the world, including Democratic politicians.

Some rationalize utilizing that hate platform to the nth degree. At this point, there really isn’t any justification for supporting X. I don’t get it.

I can see bots, MAGAt trolls, and other nations' RW accounts in replies, but I just ignore them or destroy them with a text smack down, some of which occasionally get hundreds of likes.

Most of my posts in X are about football (real football, what the US calls soccer), or some music I happen to fancy a share of.

I have a Bluesky account, but it is only for scrolling, I never reply or like. Same for Threads.

Fuck Musk, btw.

Cheers,

If we withdraw from X, the sources will follow.

Every link, every scroll, is money - and power - in Musk's pocket.

The only socmed platform not owned and controlled by billionaires is Mastodon. I guess that's why it's fading away.

I can do my own "moderating." My feed gets controversy from both the left and right. Some of the things said are quite seriously deranged and go too far. That's fine. It's part of the fun of freedom to see things in their natural state.

There's absolutely no way I would accept having the self-selected monks of any political religion decide what I get to hear or read. For people who like to think, that's the very definition of Hell. Whether it's a dainty fringe trying to be kind (and not being) or a nasty fringe trying to be tyrannical thug trash, a censor is a censor.

My ears and eyes, my choice.

There are a ridiculously huge number of Democrats on X, of course. I see abandoning X by some who consider themselves to be on the left as foolish, frankly. Jump in. The water is fine. If you hear something that makes you frown, you'll live.

Liberalism and progressivism can't live in a protected bubble. They need to state their case openly, honestly, strongly, and, hopefully persuasively. It's the only way to win.

Progressives on X have a strong presence on X. It would be foolish to self-censor our voices in such an important public sphere.

Presumably the ugly enjoys the same isolation. So let's not talk about protected bubbles, okay?

These social media sites automatically build bubbles for their users. It's part of their business strategy. They let just enough content through from the other side to keep it spicy, but not enough to make wading through their sites pure drudgery.

If the site-formerly-known-as-twitter didn't sort people out into their own bubbles -- if everyone got identical feeds -- nobody would want to go there.

I rarely see any crap I find offensive on my YouTube landing page but I know YouTube is full of crap especially when I see so much of it posted here on DU. Entire sections of DU are YouTube wastelands from my perspective and I ignore those posts and forums just as I ignore posts from the-site-formerly-known-as-twitter, blue sky, facebook, etc..

Certainly DU is a "bubble" but my life outside of the internet is not a bubble, not in any way. I interact with all sorts of people face to face, many of them with beliefs I abhor. I'm not walking down the sidewalk eyes glued to my smartphone using it as some kind of social shield.

Damned right I think it's unethical to support businesses owned by Elon Musk and it pisses me off that any of my tax dollars are going his way. Musk's social media sites, SpaceX, Tesla, Starlink, grock... all of it can go to hell.

Sure, it's your eyes and ears, your choice. But there's nothing that says I have to support or defend your choice. I don't even have to politely respect that choice.

Playing "nice" with people who play dirty got us into this mess. Playing nice won't get us out of it.

Musk isn't the only one. This idiot racist ex fox news weekend anchor saying shit like this... on D-Day. Then a week later there is unrest in a bunch of cities in the UK. Anyone familiar with Tommy Robinson the far right leader... he was hanging out with Musks father... in Moscow. See bluesky post below. This is Nigel Farage's UK.

Fuck Trump fuck musk fuck hegseth fuck Robinson fuck farage.

https://www.reuters.com/video/watch/idRW662006062026RP1/

June 6, 2026

Speaking during D-Day commemorations for the 82nd anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned on Saturday (June 6) that Europe faced what he called an invasion of dangerous ideologies arriving by sea.

Musk's father is fully a Kremlin asset. Now he's meeting with Tommy Robinson in a luxury hotel bar in Moscow while Robinson incites pogroms from his X account.

In particular, I'm on several stock market threads, that are important to me. I get useful updates on pandemics, tsunami alerts, stock markets, posts from my elected reps, election returns, the Ukraine war, etc. You can control your information stream by who you follow. Invaders try to butt in, but they are easy to quickly dispatch.

I detest Musk, but there is no competitor that provides that same constellation of useful information. I'm going nowhere. Your mileage may vary.
