How the DeSantis administration spent immigration emergency funds this summer
Expenses included restaurant bills at Tallahassee restaurants, custom badges and legal costs.
That spending included more than $166,000 on restaurant bills and catering, $717,000 on travel including a $203,000 private jet bill two days before Christmas and at least $1.7 million on outside attorneys defending the states detention centers in court.
The agency has used the fund to commit $380 million through 83 contracts with private vendors. The largest contracts include $92 million to porta-potty outfit Doodie Calls, $61 million to IRG Global Emergency Management and $52 million to Garner Environmental Services.
The money comes from Floridas Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund, a pot of cash controlled by the governor. It was first established by the Republican-led Legislature in 2022 to give DeSantis office faster access to money during crises. Democrats have long derided it as a slush fund for the governor to use as he pleases with scant oversight.

(2,715 posts)For over three years now, they have been funneling the bulk of the "Green Project" grant money from the Biden Administration to wealthy land owners in the form of "fake" conservation easements. I know many here will hear "conservation" and think that's great, but that's not what is really happening. In Florida, a conservation easement simply means "paying a rich land owner to not develop land he wasn't going to develop in the first place". Its called "the rich man's boondoggle". We are talking literally hundreds of millions of dollars given to already rich and wealthy individuals. Some people have even bought land for the sole purpose of re-selling it to the State or getting one of these fake conservation easements and getting back 40%-50% of their purchase price.
These are the same people who frequently wine "we can't spend anymore....wahhhhhh...." when it comes to assistance for school lunches, child care, education and health care. But this is their new grift - Take as much tax-payer money as possible and funnel it to already rich and wealthy individuals and companies as "payback" for Covid payments to the poor and decades of public assistance.
