Florida’s Controversial 50 Years of History With Scientology
By Senior Staff Writer, Edmond Thorne: 09/06/2025 14:30 EST

Fla. News Network — In 1975, a group calling itself the United Churches of Florida quietly purchased the historic Fort Harrison Hotel in downtown Clearwater. The name was a front. Behind it stood the Church of Scientology, which had chosen this Gulf Coast city as the site for its spiritual headquarters, later dubbed the Flag Land Base. The move was strategic, secretive, and, as it turned out, deeply disruptive and divisive.

Within months, city officials began to suspect something was off. Clearwater’s then-mayor, Gabe Cazares, became one of the first vocal critics. What followed was a bizarre and disturbing campaign: Cazares was targeted in a staged hit-and-run, and false rumors about his personal life were circulated. These tactics were later revealed in FBI investigations into Scientology’s covert operations, including “Operation Freakout,” which aimed to silence critics through intimidation and disinformation.

…Bondi is aware Scientologists are staging the event, said campaign spokeswoman Christina Johnson. She said Bondi first connected with Scientologists in 2010 when she and other elected officials toured some of the church's Clearwater facilities. Bondi spoke then to a group of Scientologists about human trafficking and the evils of pill mills, a topic that resonated because Scientologists sponsor what they tout as the largest antidrug program in the world.

At Tuesday's fundraiser, she will return to those themes, Johnson said. "It's like-minded folks sharing the same goals: Protecting children against drug overdoses and human trafficking,'' Johnson said.

Dr. Jacques Vallee, PhD computer scientist, a venture capitalist with integrity, and a UFO investigator non pareil, studied how the phenomenon impacts witnesses' minds, their impact on our society and culture, and what they hold for the future of civilization.

Dr. Vallee wrote the work, studying UFO contactees and cults, including "Bo" and "Peep" before they led the Heaven's Gate mass suicide of 1997. One doesn't have to be interested in flying saucers to see how just their mere suggestion as an idea stirs minds and hearts.

Those interested in human beings and our place in reality and the cosmos should know the book. Judging by your writings on DU, I believe you especially would appreciate the work.

From 'Newsweek':

"Pam Bondi’s Ties to Scientology Explained"

"Donald Trump's nominee for Attorney General Pam Bondi has held ties to the Church of Scientology at various points throughout her career."

"During her tenure she accepted campaign contributions from Scientologists and attended multiple fundraisers organized by prominent members of the church."

"A fundraiser for Bondi's reelection campaign in 2014 in Clearwater, Florida, was organized by six prominent Scientologists, the Tampa Bay Times reported at the time. Christina Johnson, Bondi's campaign spokeswoman, told the newspaper that Bondi was aware that Scientologists were staging the event."

https://www.newsweek.com/pam-bondi-donald-trump-attorney-general-nominee-ties-scientology-explained-1989936

From 'Resisting Project 2025':

"A former Scientologist, Bondi is now linked to the Christian evangelical end-times dominionist New Apostolic Reformation (NAR)."

https://resistingproject2025.org/pam-bondi

From 'Right Wing Watch':

"Trump AG Pick Pam Bondi Tied to New Apostolic Reformation Dominionists"

"Pam Bondi, President-elect Donald Trump’s second pick for U.S. Attorney General, has ties to New Apostolic Reformation dominionists who worked hard to put Trump back in office and believe his election will bring about a spiritual 'great awakening' that will help like-minded right-wing Christians take control of the 'seven mountains' of influence in America—government, business, education, media, arts and entertainment, religion, and family."

"After Bondi left office as Florida’s Attorney General, she joined the America First Policy Institute, a think tank created by former staffers that, like the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, has been laying the groundwork for a 'revolutionary' plan to 'seize control' and dismantle the 'administrative state' - federal agencies charged with protecting American workers, consumers, and communities from corporate wrongdoing."

"This year, AFPI partnered with dominionist Lance Wallnau’s Courage Tour, which mixed religious revival with Christian nationalist politics and pro-Trump political organizing. Wallnau celebrated the announcement of Bondi’s nomination as a 'great pick,' noting, 'She’s part of the America First Policy Institute, a great group I had the privilege of working with in the last year.' "

"Reflecting the MAGA movement’s increasingly aggressive Christian nationalist orientation, AFPI claims scriptural foundations for every aspect of its right-wing policy agenda, which it has called '10 Pillars for Restoring a Nation Under God.' "

of one of the nuttiest women I've ever come across. 🤪

I used to live in Clearwater and am well aware of scientology's "tactics," some of which seem to have been adopted by TrumpCo. to intimidate and obfuscate at the same time.

The very second the U.S. government recognized scientology as a "religion" was the start of one of the biggest con-jobs in U.S. history. Most people will never begin to know how far scientology's tentacles spread.

That's all I have to say on that subject.

among residents as to who the purchaser was. The church kept it really hush-hush. Years later, I returned there to work a FEMA disaster and one of my colleagues asked if there was a Navy base there. Explained that those were the Scientologists wearing their white uniforms. It's allegedly the word "clear" in Clearwater that attracted them in the first place.

The church has pretty much taken over the city...bought up tons of real estate and non-church resident/business owners were pretty much put out of their shops.

The Tampa Bay Times (formerly The St. Pete Times) has covered the church forever -- even contested its tax-exempt status as a ""religion," but lost.

includes the following:

"As Florida's Attorney General, Pam Bondi remained unwavering in her commitment to make Florida the safest state to live, work, and raise a family... In her commitment to combating human trafficking, Attorney General Bondi spearheaded efforts to strengthen Florida's state laws, raise public awareness, and provide enhanced resources for victims. Under her leadership, the Florida Legislature created the Florida Statewide Human Trafficking Council. Attorney General Bondi served as Chair of the Council until the conclusion of her tenure as Florida Attorney General." (My italics.)

Combatting human trafficking was her big campaign issue, and plenty of FL MAGA politicians got all righteous about how they would protect victims. The hypocrisy of MAGAts knows no limits.
