The Department of Homeland Security jumped on the news, saying in a statement that its mass deportation efforts had helped achieve that apparent administration goal.
"In just one year, nearly 3 million illegal aliens have left the U.S. under the Trump administrations crackdown on illegal immigration," the agency said in a statement.
The Census Bureau reported that population growth slowed significantly over the past fiscal year, increasing by 0.5% or 1.8 million people between July 2024 and July 2025.

(5,176 posts)I don't disbelieve the numbers. I really have no way of knowing, and that destruction of reliable facts upon which to base one's belief is part of the point of the game that authoritarians play.
One thing that I do know is that people are not illegal, people are undocumented.

(12,758 posts)... has successfully terrorized people into leaving who were vetted and were here as recipients of asylum.
One story from an acquaintance in upstate NY: Her church sponsored a family's application and worked for years to get them here and were continuing support as they got established. Around Oct 2025 they were so terrorized by what they were seeing/hearing that they decided to return to a very unstable and dangerous situation. They were more afraid of the chaos here than what they had fled.
You know things are bad when people with valid asylum claims conclude that the risks they face here are worse than the risks in their former home.
Trump has made America a scarier place than the nations we once condemned for their human rights violations.

(6,760 posts)It indicates that "international migration" has caused the decrease in population. Doesn't mention "illegal aliens" or "illegal immigration". Just "international migration"
Of course DHS uses the more degrading and dehumanizing language.
Hate those fuckers.

Basically, this is awful and means terrible things for the economy. Not just entry level jobs or farm jobs, but college viability and enrollment, tourism etc . . .

(5,176 posts)"The moment we no longer have a free press, anything can happen. What makes it possible for a totalitarian or any other dictatorship to rule is that people are not informed; how can you have an opinion if you are not informed? If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer. This is because lies, by their very nature, have to be changed, and a lying government has constantly to rewrite its own history. On the receiving end you get not only one liea lie which you could go on for the rest of your daysbut you get a great number of lies, depending on how the political wind blows. And a people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think and to judge. And with such a people you can then do what you please."
