Bagel shops giving out free breakfasts and raising money to feed people

I haven't been on DU for a few days, so my apologies if this has already been posted.

A bagel shop in Seattle raised $24,000 in one day from paying customer donations to cover the costs of giving away free breakfasts to people whose SNAP benefits are cut off. They got the idea from a Portland bagel shop which is doing the same. If you know someone who gets SNAP, check up on them, see if they need something.

that it was a partnership between the company and the customers which raised the money for the activity which the shop chose.

When you check out at Walmart and they ask you for a donation, the donations given by the customers appear as if they are the generosity of Walmart. And the donations go to a cause picked by Walmart.

I don't trust Walmart's business practices. OTOH, the supermarket where I regularly shop frequently has fund drives for the local food bank. I always donate to them.

In the video that I posted, the bagel shop owners did not take exclusive credit for the donations they received. They made it clear that the customers provided the money. A business like that is able to reach far more people than a few individuals who try on their own to help people whose food has been cut off.

Some years ago, I worked part time at a supermarket during summer break from classes. By the end of the month, food stamp recipients had used up their benefits, so the first 2 days of the month were incredibly busy as people stocked up on staples like milk, eggs, etc.

The courts have ordered that the administration must come up with money for SNAP, but it will be some time before it's sorted out and people who need the food can get it. Meantime, the rest of us can and should do what we can to help anyone who needs food. We can donate to food banks or volunteer to work at one since they are overwhelmed right now.
