...we already have an authoritarian regime in the White House with the president directly defying the courts as he unilaterally directs the dismantling of congressionally approved programs and institutions without any legislative authority, gambling his autocratic actions against often compliant higher courts packed with republicans and Trump appointees.
What Trump is seeking to do is create a totalitarian state where dissent against the government or against the present republican ideology and dictum is outlawed to the degree that it's prohibited in government and even businesses which would be allowed to deprive people of their jobs and livelihoods because of political disagreements with the current republican regime.
Trump announced on Sunday that his administration was already subjecting a number of left-wing groups to a major investigation. One of his top aides and Vice President JD Vance suggested on Monday that they are focusing their investigative efforts on what they see as domestic terrorism.
The organized doxing campaigns, the organized riots, the organized street violence, the organized campaigns of dehumanization, vilification, posting people's addresses, combining that with messaging that's designed to trigger, incite violence, and the actual organized cells that carry out and facilitate the violence, it is a vast domestic terror movement, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said on a memorial episode of the Charlie Kirk Show hosted by Vance on Monday. With God as my witness, we are going to use every resource we have at the Department of Justice, Homeland Security, and throughout this government to identify, disrupt, dismantle, and destroy these networks and make America safe again for the American people."
Many observers have assumed that the presidents current desire to crack down on such groups was spurred by the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10; statements from top officials in his administration indicate that such an operation was in the works even earlier.

Trump's retribution investigation and prosecution effort is an absurd pursuit, but our courts have already been reduced to mere foils for the maga majority on the Supreme Court which now takes on decisions from successive lower courts, even sometimes bypassing them to issue reversals without explanation, guidance, or rarely citing any precedent as they render contradictory and often conflicting rulings which roil years of jurisprudence and reasoning of courts now forced to operate as a permanent, quasi-opposition to the new imperiousness of the mostly unaccountable, lifetime appointments of republican defenders and apologists.
So the threat of totalitarianism here is very real, with more than a tinge of anti-sedition efforts directed out of the White House to make all of this more than just a little threatening to ALL Americans who may hold or express a view that this administration opportunistically decides to prosecute in an overtly political defense of their own republican prerogatives.
Roughly half of the nation supported Trump in the last election and the other half of the electorate voted against him. He's not presiding over a republican convention, he's elected to be president of ALL Americans and to do more than advantage his own party's cynical politics against their political rivals by martyring one dead American as if killers in this country are of only one political persuasion.
But it's not even a subversive or clever effort Trump's attempting here to try and make our national debate and discussion conform to the White House's scapegoating of their political opposition. It's an arrogant and dominating threat he's making behind prosecutorial powers provided to him by more than just the people and party he's advantaging with this autocracy and corruption of the courts.
To republicans, this is a vindicating scheme that validates all of their anti-democratic actions; like trying to stop the certification of votes in a presidential election as Trump supporters attacked police, injuring over 140 and contributing to the deaths of other law enforcement officers attacked that day; traitors to this country who were ALL pardoned by this same president who's set to rampage against Americans he identifies as his personal enemy with our troops and our courts aimed squarely at his rival Democrats.
The operating logic for republicans in this is a repudiation of a government that would hold their party's anarchists and autocrats accountable to the people, with the end game to the election for republicans all about trophy-taking, and not democratic action on behalf of all Americans.
They're dominating Democrats using the government we all pay for just because they can, in a disgraceful display of false nationalism that only serves their narrow, partisan interests to acquire power, maintain power, and use it to crush any opposition.
You may well have the appearance of democratic action in the U.S. today, but the republican party and Trump regime intends for there to only be ONE set of ideals and only ONE ideology represented in our government and nation which exclusively serves their own party's, and ultimately the president's, narrow interests.
There is no Democratic effort of "organized doxing campaigns, the organized riots, organized street violence, organized campaigns of dehumanization, vilification, posting people's addresses, combining that with messaging that's designed to trigger, incite violence, and the actual organized cells that carry out and facilitate the violence."
That's a paranoid fantasy which has been deliberately inserted into the national dialogue by the WH which intends to incite Americans to act precipitously against other Americans in an political civil war orchestrated from the White House. They aren't disguising it at all.
Miller and his ilk hope the outcome of all of their Kafkaesque terror campaign leads to Trump advantaged by the ensuing chaos and resistance to declare a false emergency self-serving to his desire to maintain power beyond his second term and in contravention of the Constitution.
This republican WH is either certain they're entitled to railroad Democrats because of the one election we just held, or they're just emboldened by it to carry forth with their political coup.
Either way, it's a bid to transform their soft autocracy into totalitarianism; misquoting Benjamin Franklin, 'if they can keep it.'
