Trump vows national emergency in Washington, DC over ICE dispute

(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he would call a national emergency and federalize Washington, D.C. after Mayor Muriel Bowser said its police would not cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

At issue is the provision of information on individuals living in, or entering, the United States illegally. Trump's threat adds to a move critics have seen as federal overreach, with more than 2,000 troops patrolling the city.

The comments come after several thousand protesters hit the streets this month over Trump's August deployment of National Guard troops to "re-establish law, order, and public safety," after calling crime a blight on the capital.

"In just a few weeks. The "place" is absolutely booming... for the first time in decades, virtually NO CRIME," Trump said on Truth Social.

On Saturday, September 13, 2025, at approximately 3:48 a.m., Third District officers responded to the 2000 block of 14th Street, Northwest for the report of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, unconscious but breathing, suffering stab wounds. DC Fire and EMS transported the victim to an area hospital where after all lifesaving measures failed, the victim was pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation revealed the stabbing occurred during a large fight. Three additional victims self-transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

of deploying federal forces to address state crimes.

I.e., ok, immigraiton is a national concern (and states that are stuck with any costs for immigration law enforcement should accordingly be completely reimbursed by the federal government), so if that's all Trump were doing, I could at least see an argument that it might be legal.

But he's openly declaring that his actions are at least partly about crimes – murder, rape, theft, etc., all of which are matters of STATE law and enforcement; so i don't see how he has any authority at all to order federal forces to get involved in such things, especially when it's over the objections of local authorities.

Seriously, is any rationale being offered beyond "it's really terrible so someone's got to do something"?

He doesn't like being told "no" by anyone. It conflicts with his dictatorial powers. Hats off to Mayor Bowser in her resistance to this invading force.

We have to stick together. If he wins there, he will seek to establish troops in every city. He has already signalled his intentions to do that. Our job is to resist by peaceful protest, communicate the true state of the Union, support those voices of dissent, and seek to gain the support of the military to our side. Donald is going to get people killed.

He already is exploring shooting people who basically are doing nothing wrong. All other dictators and authoritarian leaders have np problem shooting dead people that oppose them. Donald Two Scoops is just working his nerve up incrementally.

Donald's M.O. is to have a third party to throw under the bus. He doesn't do well when the arrow points straight at him. This is the Achilles heel that other dictators do not have. Others don't mind slaughtering thousands at a time. Donald's technique was learned early, has become a habit, and it is not something that he will give up easily.

So, if he can get the troops to kill people, he will blame them for ill restraint. When we dissent, we are protecting both ourselves and them. We need the military to turn on Trump, et al. They are our warriors, along with the state leaders who also dissent and speak up. Courage is contagious. Mayor Bowser (love that name) is on the side of the People.
