Utah governor says the motive in Kirk shooting is not yet certain but the suspect was on the left
WASHINGTON (AP) Family and friends of the 22-year-old accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk described his politics as veering left in recent years as he spent large amounts of time scrolling the dark corners of the internet, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Sunday.
Investigators were still piecing together information about the suspect, Tyler Robinson, and not yet ready to discuss a potential motive. But Cox noted that Robinson, who is not cooperating with law enforcement, disliked Kirk and may have been radicalized online.
Kirk founded Turning Point USA to bring more young, conservative evangelical Christians into politics as effective activists, and he was a confidant of President Donald Trump, leading to a flood of tributes that included a vigil Sunday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, became prominent in part through his speaking tours, and he was shot Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University.
There clearly was a leftist ideology, Cox said on NBCs Meet the Press, citing interviews with Robinsons relatives and acquaintances. Friends have confirmed that there was kind of that deep, dark internet, the Reddit culture, and these other dark places of the internet where this person was going deep.

(880 posts)Near as I can tell, Reddit leans slightly left politically, with approx 58% left leaning among users and approx 62% left leaning among moderators. Last time I checked, that pretty much mirrors the US population in many polls. Per the end of the excerpt below, "... biased content moderation is not limited to any one side."
So although Reddit started as a bastion of libertarianism, it's pretty far from being either a liberal or MAGA 'cesspool', and definitely not part of the so-called 'Dark Web®'.
These people are just flapping their gums. They don't have any interest in learning about any of this, and apparently the media doesn't either. They're just going to say this guy was radical left and use BS to prove it.

And here's a link to the study itself ... it's pretty technical, but worth a look.

I go there sometimes because of the diverse subreddits, and they often dont let moderation ease up despite the number of topics.

(880 posts)... subreddits. Every once in a while ... even in something like gardening ... a disruptor shows up. Unless they're super obnoxious it seems the strategy is pretty much to ignore them, and they flame out before too long. There may be other subs that are less forgiving, but I don't know. I'm not doing any political stuff on Reddit.
The idea of moderation was addressed pretty heavily in the study, but it's sort of heavy reading if you want to check it out. They determined that the mods were slightly more left-leaning than the membership. The study was interesting in that they were able to access the posts that had been deleted by the mods and factored that into the data. The gist of the study seemed to be that user volunteer moderation skews the political orientation slightly to the left. Fine with me!
I do very little social media (no FB, no IG, no TikTok, no X, no Bluesky, no etc, etc) but Reddit seems to be a pretty good resource for the things that interest me, like growing hot peppers. Definitely not the Dark Web®, though!

(28,989 posts)There are definite conservative spots in Reddit though. Reddit is way more moderates and relatively well-moderated than say, Facebook, X, Bluesky, Youtube, etc.

Spent entirely too much time on 4chan and kiwifarms, got sucked into groyper meme culture, and decided to kill Charlie Kirk 'for the lulz' and now he'll be seen as a hero to those communities forever.

4. Governor Cox thinks Reddit is the dark web
It's should be interesting to see how they attempt to tie this together Tuesday when Tyler is charged.

(5,248 posts)Deep, dark places and Reddit culture does not point to leftist ideology. You have to be really slow to agree with Cox on that. But, then, Maga are ... ummm ... desperate to cling to anything that makes the killer one of "them" instead of Maga.
