(Guardian UK) Charlie Kirk, the far-right commentator and ally of Donald Trump, was killed on Wednesday doing what he was known for throughout his career making incendiary and often racist and sexist comments to large audiences.
If it was current and controversial in US politics, chances are that Kirk was talking about it. On his podcasts, and on the podcasts of friends and adversaries, and especially on college campuses, where he would go to debate students, Kirk spent much of his adult life defending and articulating a worldview aligned with Trump and the Maga movement. Accountable to no one but his audience, he did not shy away in his rhetoric from bigotry, intolerance, exclusion and stereotyping.

(8,413 posts)He really stepped into it. I am starting to think Newsom is too unpredictable to be a good potential presidential candidate in 2028. He keeps making gaffes. He had Kirk on his podcast a few months ago under the guise that one should have civil conversations with the likes of them.

(9,229 posts)So many of my then-fellow conservative talk radio buds were really big on David Duke (this was when he made himself over into a moderate right-winger in his quest for New Orleans governorship). This was one of many veils that were lifted before I ideologically GREW UP.
Damn, I hate and feel shame for that phase of my youth though it's been a teaching moment ever since.

(7,925 posts)I've been so annoyed with the " policy differences" talk.
Whether we should have Medicare for all is a policy difference.
Even though I support Obamacare and Immigration, we can have policy differences there - Not based on race on ethnicity but actual policy.
Should we have a guest worker program? If so, should it be limited to certain industries where they have the most need?
How many visas per year?
Should companies that use guest workers be taxed at a higher rate?
Those are all policies to debate.
The right to exist and human rights are not just policy differences.

(10,112 posts)Could be handy to have a pinned source of quotes of "the Great" Charlie Kirk, so we could have easy access to quotes and responses when the inevitable trolls appear. Could be handy to use on other platforms, too. Any volunteers? I would try but I'm too busy and old. Especially old.
I know the guy was a scumbag and I know he said a lot of racist, sexist shit, but can I remember any of them? Not many.
I see the lionization of this jerk all over the place and it makes me ill and angry. Nothing like a martyr.
Now they want a Charlie Kirk statue at the Capitol. How about we rename the country Kirkland?
Just a thought.
