It seems to me they were intentional so as to test MATO's response. Will Article 5 be invoked? Will the US act in lockstep with the rest of NATO?

Poland is signaling to NATO members that its independence and security is once again being threatened by Russia's violations of its air space. This requires all members to respond jointly to Poiand's concerns.

(14,593 posts)Russia and Belarus were doing their annual jointexercise, and one of the scenarios is always an attack of or from NATO.
This time, Putin put a toe in the water to see what was possible going in for real. Poland used to be a client buffer state between the Soviet and the West, Putin wants it back, just as he wants a clear passage to Kaleningrad.
He's desperate to look strong.
