Subtle Mockery for MAGA

An interesting thing happened while a few of us former government state employees were milling around a patio at a local waterfront bar and hotel. We were talking about the absurdity of the Pizza-gate episode and the crazy conspiracy theories of Q-Anon. Our conversation must have been loud enough so a middle-aged couple overheard us referring to it as a cult. Although we were not talking to these people, their facial expressions and whispers spoke volumes. They were clearly visiting our fair city (very democratic leaning city) and were surprised to hear people refer to their belief system as a cult. So, my suggestion is to consider following the lead of Gavin Newsom and to stick a few cult references in the faces of these MAGA true believers. Their psyche is a lot more fragile than their exterior bravado. If these people we interacted with are reasonable examples of Trump and MAGA followers, they are dismayed that others see them as “cultists” or people have lost their ability to think independently or to control their thought processes.

I purchased a T-shirt from Etsy with a subtle reference to the cult idea that might register with a certain age audience (see below). But the part about Kool-Aid is universally understood. So, if you are up for it, give them a little taste of their own medicine by sticking the word cult into discussions, on your signs, on clothing or in written materials about MAGA members.

2. One of the defining characteristics of being a cult-member is the iron-clad belief that you are NOT a cult-member

The IQ47 cultists are no different, thus, I don't think one can 'get to them' in this way. All that happens is they'll sputter that it's YOU who are in a cult, a "woke cult' or a "Biden cult" or some other total nonsense. Even if some thought "yeah, maybe SOME people are in a Trump cult", they would inevitably think that is a group to which THEY do not belong.

You may be able to annoy them with stuff like this t-shirt, but they will never genuflect in the way you or I might

3. You are probably right when it comes to a subset of these people.

There is probably nothing that will reach these people. However, there are others like these people we met who are astounded when not everyone believes their Q-Anon or MAGA nonsense (no one likes to believe that they do not control their own destiny or thoughts).

However, that picture makes me nauseous and I couldn’t bring myself to look at it, never mind have it on my body for any period of time! 🤮

But, to be clear, it is the guy with the orange face and no glasses is the one that really makes me sick!
