For the past three years, the industry, aided by its allies in Congress and later the Trump administration, has sought to discredit and eventually bury a major analysis that offers new evidence of the link between drinking alcohol and getting sick and dying from various causes, including cancer.
It appears their campaign has succeeded. Three co-authors on the Alcohol Intake and Health Study, which was commissioned in early 2022 by the US Department of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden, told Vox that they were informed last month that the Trump administration did not intend to publish the final draft of the study or its findings.
The thing that the alcohol industry fears more than increased taxes is increased knowledge about the risks associated with drinking alcohol, particularly around cancer, Mike Marshall, CEO of a group dedicated to reducing alcohols harms called the Alcohol Policy Alliance, who was not involved with the study, told me. Like the tobacco industry, like the opioid industry, they are working hard to prevent the American people from gaining the knowledge that they need to make the best decisions for themselves.
Why assert so much pressure? It makes sense if you look at the headwinds the alcohol industry faces. Americans today are drinking less. This year, Gallup recorded a historic low in the percentage of US adults who drink: 54 percent, down from 67 percent in 2022.

And beer supports football, baseball and other sports, and fattens the court system and the lawyers involved.
Gotta say this though, it's hard to pinpoint one food to a specific illness because thousands of substances go into diet.
It might be alcohol, it might be the sugars and carbs, it might be it weakens people's immunity and allows other carcinogens to take hold such as pesticides.
Nutrition is in an uproar. Everything they told us is weakened or debunked. Now, carbs and sugar are proposed as the cause of disease, and the diseases of old age are said to be due to hormonal changes from carbs and sugars. This from the Keto Krowd.
But vegetables are still beneficial.

(66,963 posts)interesting articles on the fallacy of red wine being good for you. I love the taste of Merlot and found a winemaker that makes a non-alcoholic Merlot (my fave). The brand is FRE. They also make a non-alcoholic white wine which is good and refreshing in the summer.

(4,892 posts)They have a cabernet that's quite good, as well as a chardonnay, pinot grigio, and a sav blanc. At first it was like going from whole milk to 1% milk, but I am used to it now. My husband has been enjoying the wide array of non-alcoholic beers that are now available. His favorite is Heinekin, but there are many more on the market now. It's a trend.

Thanks! When I deplete my $6.29 bottle of Cabernet Australian, I will check out FRE! Easy to remember!
Of course in Pennsylvania State Stores - you want to talk about entrenched interests established in the 1930s - it's probably about $14 a bottle.

(36,712 posts)We stopped drinking several years ago due to some health issues, but I still like wine to cook with. My wife doesn't want any alcohol around, so I keep bottles of Fre Cabernet and Chardonnay in the kitchen. Neither of us drinks it-- personally I don't care for it in the glass-- but it's fine for cooking.
There are some de-alcoholized beers that we do like in the glass. The alcohol free Corona is hard to tell from the regular stuff and my wife likes the Blue Moon Belgium White wheat beer. In fact, when we first tried the Corona both of our local groceries only carried a six pack or two, or none. Now they both stock cases of 12-packs and lots more sixers than they used to.

(74,216 posts)I liked the taste of beer & some liquors but never cared for the alcohol buzz.
So, I was a cautious drinker, keeping consumption low & nursing everything.
Then, I discovered low alcohol beers that tasted good (and later "zero" beers).
Now, I drink what I want, but can't ever drink enough for the buzz. And nobody could drink enough "zeroes" to get drunk. It's literally impossible to consume that much liquid.
In my case, it would be 20# more than my body weight in under 3 hours.
Probably cause hyponatremia before any alcohol affect.

It's unexpected, given that Trump's brother, Fred Trump Jr., died of complications related to alcoholism in 1981.
I guess you could say now Im the chief of trying to solve it, Trump told The Washington Post six years ago when talking about fixing the opioid epidemic. I dont know that Id be working, devoting the kind of time and energy and even the money we are allocating to (the opioid crisis) I dont know that Id be doing that had I not had the experience with Fred....
Yet, when given the opportunity to address the health impacts, the administration even went so far as to change dietary guidelines to eliminate any specific recommended limits on alcohol consumption. The Biden administration previously intended to use the study to make educated, fact-based and studied guidelines.
