What they're saying:
Authorities say Gonzalo Leon Jr. was waiting by his home in the dark late Saturday night when 11-year-old Jullian Guzman and his cousin knocked on his door for the last time. The kids had knocked on the door multiple times, running away each time, and in their final attempt, investigators allege Leon opened fire, striking Guzman in the back as he ran.
Records say Guzman's cousin recalls seeing Leon come out from a gate by the house and step out to the street before he began shooting. They say Leon shot once at the ground before firing another shot at the boys.
"This was someone brutally murdering an 11-year-old simply because they were mad," said Teare. "We have a little boy who didnt even have a chance to get his life going yet, struck down for nothing."
Guzman and his cousin ran about a block away before Guzman collapsed, according to records. They say his cousin tried to drag him to safety, but Guzman later died at the hospital.
Records say investigators recovered more than 20 firearms from Leons home, including rifles, long guns and handguns. Teare says they believe a medium-caliber handgun was used in the shooting.

(33,537 posts)He could have called the cops on them, but I doubt if the cops would have shown up.
However, they probably would have gone elsewhere if he intimidated them.

(1,673 posts)There is no brandishing or warning shots per the law. The assumption is if you draw your weapon - you intend to use it. If you fire it - you intend to kill.

(126,708 posts)his cold-blooded, premediated murder of a child, is not something I would have ever thought that I would see on DU. It is, needless to say, highly disappointing.

(1,115 posts)Unfortunately those kids FAFO'd. I'm assuming this is some type of social media prank thing? Social media will be seen as one of the major contributors to the downfall of society as we know it.
As a kid, I played pranks on my friends and other kids we knew. If you messed up and did it to the wrong kid, you got your butt beat. We never messed around with random people's stuff, definitely not adults. I also wasn't running around at night unless it was in our yard or a friend's yard.
Even now as an adult I evaluate my potential interactions with strangers because half of them have a screw loose and some percentage of that group is also packing heat.

(1,803 posts)are no longer safe in 2025. Running around at 11:00 at night banging and kicking on doors of random people you don't know in the dark is a really bad idea and parents need to be having these serious conversations with kids--that just because you see it on TikTok doesn't mean it's a funny prank you should go out and try. You never know who is going to be on the other side of that door, like a guy with 20 guns and you bang and kick his door one too many times late at night, and he's going to snap and you could end up dead.
Tragic.

(17,880 posts)No social media. Hell we didnt even have cable tv and channel surfing was very limited.
So, no, social media has nothing to do with ding dong ditching. However, I would never attempt that today if I was a kid. Just reading NextDoor tells one a lot about their neighbors. A lot of comments about just seeing a stranger (to them) walking down the street and mentioning that theyll grab their guns. I got banned from there because I didnt reveal my true identity. I cant even view anything there but Im almost certain nothing there has changed.
There is another name that is extremely racist name for ding dong ditching, which here in Texas is an acceptable phrase to use.
