JB Pritzker Just Set Himself Apart From All Other Democrats

?auto=format&fit=crop&crop=faces&ar=3%3A2&ixlib=react-9.10.0&q=65&w=768&dpr=2

As Donald Trump’s goon-squad occupation of the nation’s capital wends its way into its third week, the president is already eyeing the next Democratic stronghold he’d like to strangle with his bruised hands in the name of “fighting crime.” Among the municipalities facing the mad king’s wrath is Chicago, which has loomed in far-right lore as some kind of Third World hellhole. While we wait for many Democratic leaders and media elites to take Trump’s authoritarian spree seriously, TNR editor Michael Tomasky this week urged Illinois officials to steel themselves for what’s to come. “Okay, JB Pritzker,” he wrote, “you’re up.”

It didn’t take long for the reply to come. In a Monday afternoon news conference, Illinois’s Democratic governor joined a slew of state leaders speaking out about Trump’s plan to deploy troops to Chicago. Pritzker has, over the past year, begun to cement his national profile ahead of what many presume to be a presidential run in 2028. He has firmly planted himself in the same “fighter” lane as California Governor Gavin Newsom—the better to distinguish himself from, say, whatever it is that Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer thinks she’s been doing lately.

Pritzker ended up being the headline figure of that Monday news conference, thanks to the simplicity and directness of his message. “Mr. President, do not come to Chicago,” he said. “You are neither wanted here nor needed here.” He offered some satisfying digs at the evident decline of Trump’s mental faculties. He hit many of the right notes for someone who wants to establish himself as a leader of a dissident movement. But Pritzker saved his best for last, when he promised to take the fight against Trump a step farther than most Democrats have allowed themselves.

"Finally, to the Trump administration officials who are complicit in this scheme, to the public servants who have forsaken their oath to the Constitution to serve the petty whims of an arrogant little man, to any federal official who would come to Chicago and try to incite my people into violence as a pretext for something darker and more dangerous: We are watching and we are taking names."

Just want to add that Illinois just instated the IL Pride Legal Hotline to help with challenges from the federal government. We are the first state to have this. https://www.ilprideconnect.org/legal-hotline

I feel such privilege to have JB as my governor!!

It took incredible courage to say that to the most powerful, unhinged bully in the world. And the funny thing is, I think it actually worked. trump was "shook." At least temporarily.

Thank you, Governor Pritzker.

...for what ALL of Democratic leadership should be doing, at this very moment. Newsom and Pritzker are demonstrating just how effective principled, well-spoken leadership can work, against this completely unprincipled, incoherent, dangerous regime.

Rep. Sherrill, D-11th District of NJ, is a former naval officer and former federal prosecutor.

It is unthinkable that our Governor Phil Murphy might be replaced by a rethug, if Goddess forbid she loses.

She is in a far different position than Newsom and Pritzker, who are in solid blue states and don't have to fear backlash from voters. Moreover, Pritzker is enormously wealthy (unlike Trump, his hotel chain is a success). And it hardly needs to be said that we know how women candidates don't seem to quite be able to crack the glass ceiling.

Like all Americans not of the First Peoples, they have immigrant roots - Ukranian. They have achieved great material success, accumulating one of America's largest fortunes.

They are Old Money, socially very well connected, they have created multiple REAL charities over the years that support eduction, economic development, health, community development, and the arts.

JB went to Duke and Northwestern where he apparently succeeded quite well in earning rather than buying a degree in Political Science and a Juris Doctorate. He passed the Illinois Bar, created his own capital investment company and won awards for promoting entrepreneurship and job creation in Chicago.

He "came up" through the Democratic Party and worked to promote Party engagement among under-40 voters.

He poured his own and family money into his campaigns rather than grifting voters and selling goodies to big money donors.

He nominated a woman for his running mate and has given Lite Goob Juliana Stretton active and meaningful roles in his Administration. His Administration has moved strongly to support civil rights of all types and worked hard on public safety, gun control, net neutrality, progressive taxation and raising the state's minimum wage to $15/hr.

If he finishes his current term he'll be the first Democrat to complete two terms as Illinois governor, and he's made no secret of planning to run for a third term.

He's popular and has built a broad and deep web of support both in his own state and among Democrats generally.

He's EVERYTHING [Redacted] hates and fears except female and/or brown.

interestedly,
Bright

That indicates to me he gets we will need swift and harsh punishment. Following orders would not be an acceptable statement for the person he would select as AG.

But when he said this, he sent my heart all a-whirl:

You can delay justice for a time, but history shows you cannot prevent it from finding you eventually. If you hurt my people, nothing will stop me, not time or political circumstance, from making sure that you face justice under our constitutional rule of law.

If you hurt my people, I will get you. And he said it with steel in his voice. All right, he's a Democrat; I would have voted for him anyway. But I am proud to call him my Governor.

in ways that are smart. Some folks have expected National Dems, in the minority, in the LEGISLATIVE branch, to somehow take Executive actions. That's not how our system works.
I laugh at MAGA because they don't seem to understand how our Government works. Dem Govs. can work with their legislatures, and in Newsom's case, with the proposition ballot initiative, to take executive actions that will STOP Trump in his tracks.
