COVID-19 cases are rising in at 45 states. Is the US in a summer surge? What to know about COVID trends and symptoms of the Stratus and Nimbus variants.
COVID-19 cases are rising in nearly all U.S. states as a much-anticipated summer wave sweeps the country. An uptick in transmission fueled by highly contagious new variants is causing an increasing number of Americans to come down with sore throats, coughs and other COVID symptoms just ahead of back-to-school season.
As of Aug. 5, COVID-19 infections are either growing or likely growing in 45 states, declining in zero states and unchanged in 5 states, according to forecasting models from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Currently, the South, Mid-Atlantic, and West are seeing some of the biggest increases in transmission.
The level of COVID viral activity in wastewater is moderate nationally, according to the CDC, and at least 14 states are reporting "high" or "very high" levels as of Aug. 2. Hard-hit states include California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, and Texas.

(47,601 posts)Last I heard, Secretary Brainworm had done some things that could delay the newest vaccine. I got my last one in October 2024. I asked the doctor at my annual physical a couple weeks ago if it was a good idea to get another shot with the current vaccine and she said that updated ones should be ready soon. She's young, and struck me as someone who's not paying a lot of attention to the current political complications.
Bugs me no end that all the people who were screaming about how they should have the freedom to CHOOSE! whether or not to get vaccinated are doing everything in their power to take away the freedom to choose from those who want the vaccine.

Yes. The viral activity level in the states wastewater last week was classified as very high, far outpacing national and regional averages, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The data included wastewater samples from the Houston area, with multiple sites in Harris, Montgomery and Galveston counties reporting very high viral levels. .....
Texas had the second-highest rate of COVID diagnoses among people who visited the emergency department last week, at 2%, the CDC reported. That marked a 17% increase from the week before.
I believe these numbers. After five years and nine or ten COVID shots, I finally got COVID and so this news does not surprise me. I did not wear a mask on Sunday when we saw James Gunn's Superman (a movie that I really recommend). Paxlovid is great and I am feeling human
Please take care. These numbers are scary

(37,551 posts)I've taken 8 flights this summer on packed airplanes. The only masks I've seen are mine and my daughter's. My daughter wasn't wearing hers in the airport, although she wore it on the plane - and came home with COVID after our first flight.
Hundreds of people packed on the airplanes, 30 minutes or so with only re-circulated air before take-off . . . it doesn't take a genius.
