Tax bill would cut availability of med school loans amid doctor shortage

A little-discussed provision on student loan policies in President Trump's massive budget bill would restrict borrowing for medical school and possibly exacerbate the country's physician shortage.

Why it matters: The U.S. is already projected to face a deficit of 187,130 physicians by 2037, with shortages particularly acute in specialties like vascular and thoracic surgery.

What they're saying: "We've got a tsunami of challenges already to deal with," said David Bergman, a senior vice president at the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). "It just will be exacerbated by a lack of access to reasonably priced student loans."

State of play: The GOP-led reconciliation bill moving through Congress would eliminate a federal loan program for graduate students called Grad PLUS. Loans would become unavailable for new borrowers starting in the 2026-2027 school year and for existing borrowers in the 2029-2030 term.

2. The Republicans are the enemy.

If they cut out Grad Plus loans, they will be destroying more than the medical profession. Grad school is mind boggling expensive for any subject. This is nothing but a determination to destroy higher education.

Education is just about the only way to raise yourself out of poverty and gain admittance to the middle class. Those higher skills come at a price, and there are few people except those that already have money that can pay for grad school without borrowing from the student loan program.

These people are collectively EVIL. Not just rump, but Republicans in general. There is no necessity to do this, except that they want to maintain their own wealth. They are against the United States. They are hate-filled, malicious monsters. There are probably only 5 active Republicans that are appalled at the corruption. The rest are chickenshit failures and don't deserve their jobs.

They have put thousands and thousands of workers out of jobs. And, musk doesn't understand why he is hated, and he's TOO STUPID to see how rump set him up to be the fall guy.

I wish every Republican, blinking up there in the spotlights and flurry of publishing their memoirs, would realize that they are the cause of the downfall of the United States. THEY ARE THE ENEMY. Not migrants. Not foreigners with darker skin, different religions, or diverse languages. IT'S THEM.

I am praying that we can prevail in 2026. I'm praying for other stuff, too, but this is a nightmare that needs some positivity to wake up from. I'm afraid I just don't have any.

I blame the USSC for granting Trump his wish to be free from restraint and granting his wish to be a dictator. Now, they must see that he is ignoring their rulings. The military will be our last chance.
