TX-SEN: Paxton (R) holds 9-point lead over Cornyn (R) in Texas Senate primary: Poll

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton leads Texas Sen. John Cornyn (R) by 9 points in their upcoming Republican primary battle for the state’s Senate seat next year, according to a survey released Wednesday.

The poll — from the Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center at Texas Southern University — showed Paxton leading in a hypothetical two-way contest with 43 percent to Cornyn’s 34 percent, and 23 percent unsure. The results could be another worrying sign for the incumbent lawmaker as he tries to fend off Paxton’s primary challenge, though it is notably closer than when an internal GOP poll showed the senator trailing by 16 points earlier this month.

The more recent poll showed Paxton also with advantage in favorability rating, with 68 percent of Republican primary voters viewing him favorably and 22 percent viewing him unfavorably. Meanwhile, Cornyn was viewed favorably by 58 percent and unfavorably by 34 percent.

Both candidates have high name-recognition, with few voters saying they don’t know enough about either to say how they view them.

But most of the rest of the electorate can’t be bothered to register to vote, let alone go down to the polls to cast their ballots.

I find it very disheartening. Even if the R’s won squeaker elections by three or four election points and voter turnout at about 75 percent, I’d feel hopeful and motivated. I’d still believe that the good guys had a chance. But when the most awful R’s win by double digits and over 55 percent of the electorate can’t even rouse themselves to vote, it’s heart-breaking. The electorate here is like a right-wing banana republic dictator’s wet dream, even with Texas’ changing demographics.

they used to call themselves.

Now a criminal past is an asset with the GOP. It's so... strange. Everything they used to profess to care about is reversed now.

He is a country club republican vs the little weasel.

I think Texas Republicans may be sorry Paxton chose to run against Cornyn now.

Democrat Edges Out Leading Republican in Texas Senate Race—GOP Poll

Snip
On the Republican side, a competitive primary is already brewing between Cornyn and Paxton, who is primarying the incumbent from the right. Paxton has cast Cornyn as insufficiently conservative, but Cornyn has been a well-known senator who has performed well against Democrats in the past.

A new poll from the Senate Leadership Fund, which is supporting Cornyn, showed Paxton leading Cornyn by 10 points in a hypothetical primary, Punchbowl News reported this week. The poll showed Paxton with 44 percent, Cornyn with 34 percent and GOP Representative Wesley Hunt, who has been floated as a potential candidate, with 19 percent.

But in the general election, Cornyn would fare best against Allred, who unsuccessfully challenged GOP Senator Ted Cruz in last year's election, according to the poll. Allred has not officially announced a 2026 Senate campaign, but is widely seen as a likely Democratic contender.

Cornyn led by six points, while Hunt led Allred by four points. Paxton, however, trailed Allred by one point, the poll found.

But which ever R wins the Texas Republican primary, I’ll contribute to the Texas Democratic candidate’s campaign.

He wins every time, and is more popular than Texas' other Senator, Ted Cruz. Now Paxton, on the other hand, may be even too crazy for Texas.

I suspect that Cornyn’s days in the senate may be numbered. The right-wing Texas cray-crays think he’s vulnerable and they might succeed.

Paxton is crooked enough and stupid enough to be swept into the Senate by dumbfuck Texas Republicans. Mark my words: If Paxton becomes a U.S. Senator, he'll make Ted Cruz look smart, honest, effective and likeable, by comparison. I kid you not...
