FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence following her arrest in her West Virginia hometown.

Fairmont police stopped Retton on May 17 following a report about a person in a Porsche driving erratically. According to the criminal complaint, Retton smelled of alcohol and was slurring her words, and she failed a field sobriety test.

Officers also reported observing a container of wine in the passenger seat.

Retton, 57, refused a roadside breath test and a blood test. She was released from custody after paying a $1,500 personal recognizance bond.

Retton was an outspoken supporter of the Reagan administration and appeared in a variety of television ads supporting Ronald Reagan as well as appearing at a rally for his reelection campaign just a month after the Olympics in her home state of West Virginia. Retton delivered the Pledge of Allegiance with fellow former gymnast and 1996 Olympic gold medalist Kerri Strug on the second night of the 2004 Republican National Convention.

*First, I realize it might not be her Porsche, or it might be old junk (tell me it's a 1987 924 and my pity for her will grow substantially). Second, I realize that medical bills can easily be out of reach even for folks that can afford an entry level Porsche these days. It just stuck out to me.

In a text message to USA TODAY Sports Saturday, Kelley would not comment on how much of the nearly half-million dollars has been accounted for, but said that “all remaining funds” would go to a charity of her mother’s choice. She offered no timetable or further information.

12. In 2023 she had pneumonia and was in a ICU.

They raised over $200k to try to cover her medical bills. The important thing to learn here is to drink at home or if you are out and about have a designated sober driver. Thankfully she didn't kill or injury anyone so she is not going to the gray bar hotel.

I'm Disappointed in her.
