We were swimming in the ocean and this fellow and his wife struck up a conversation with us. A very friendly guy. He's an American citizen living in Panama and his comments were striking.
"I feel Trump lied to me."
"He never said he was going to break the U.S. government."
"When did he become a fan of tariffs?"
"Trump sold us a bill of goods."
"My portfolio is in the shitter."
"I never expected him to be so stupid."
"I wish he would die already."
I politely told him that many people were in the "Find Out" phase and Vance wouldn't be any better. He laughed then said, "Still, things are better than if THAT WOMAN had won."
Hopeless. I just shook my head.

(210 posts)but Hillary won the popular vote and we may find out some day that Kamala actually won the election.
Those who voted against Harris "because she is a woman" would have voted against Biden "because he's too old" or against Gavin Newsom "because he's too handsome", blah blah blah.
Many people who voted for Trump did so out of ignorance.
I personally think we will likely elect an Independent to the presidency soon----an actor or a person with a dynamic personality.
It's just a popularity contest to most Americans now. They don't understand the issues and have no interest in learning about them.

But my wife was with me and she gets upset if I engage in political arguments when she's around. You know, happy wife/happy life.
Actually, he was a very pleasant fellow and the politics came at the end of our half-hour swim/floating. His wife was from Spain and she was lovely with a terrific sense of humor.
As I'm getting older, I'm learning to choose my battles more carefully than when I was a hot-headed youth!
Enjoy your holiday weekend, Cha!

(311,269 posts)I never would even encounter someone like that.. I just wanted to get it out there about what we as a Nation and the world lost.

(8,791 posts)It is just an open-ended query that doesn't require additional commentary on your part. Let them answer and that's it.
However, it would likely lead to them asking you the same. So your wife's point is taken.
Happy holiday weekend to you as well!

(11,611 posts)Just because he may not like trump does NOT mean they prefer the Democrats.
Hearing about disaffected trumpers doesnt mean we will win the next election. I know for me that I often became optimistic about the disaffected trumpers, but that optimism was unfounded. We still have to sell our side. Or we die.

(4,526 posts)and probably anti POC too. Said Kamala lied about Biden's mental condition. Trump's 27,372 lies I guess were more benign somehow. NUTS!

(1,250 posts)just that, and EVERY fucking Republican primary candidate in the last presidential election cycle signed off on enacting it if they won. All of them. Not just Trump.
So many people just chose to stick their heads in the fucking sand and deny that Project 2025 was the agenda when it always was.
Oh...and anyone who falls back on "Still better than the Dem" clearly isn't that regretful. They're still trying to justify their vote.
Trump's supporters deserve every pain and sorrow they reap thanks to their stupid votes for a CONVICTED CRIMINAL!
I have a particular and seething hatred for all the so-called Christians who supported a man who violates all Ten Commandments blatantly.
My impression was that this fellow was more foolish than hateful, however. Our conversation was mostly about family and life in Panama than politics. It was quite pleasant until he started bemoaning his decisions.
In any event, I wish you a happy holiday weekend, Karasu!

(52,947 posts)but literally the one and only consistent policy position the man had for the last 40 years was to be in favor of tariffs. For any of his voters not to understand he would impose tariffs is simply surreal.

Still, I understand your point.

I was on a small boat with some other people when a huge cruise ship just missed us. The ship's wake swamped us and we started to sink. On top of it the cruise ship dumped their sewage as they passed and there were turds floating all over.
Another boat sailed over but was having difficulty getting close enough for the tow line to reach. Nobody wanted to swim through the turds, but the water in the boat was getting higher.
Finally the Trump guy dived in. We all watched as the turds floated to either side and left a path for the Trump guy to swim to the other boat.
One guy seemed not to be surprised so I asked what had happened. He turned to me and said "Professional courtesy".

(72,870 posts)...that he doesn't actually regret his vote.
Regret would seem to include a realization that he voted the wrong way.
But the "that woman" statement is abundantly clear that he would still vote for the felon.

(872 posts)For these gullible idiots who made the stupidest decision of their life by putting a twice impeached convicted felon back into the White House...and they refuse to own their idiocy. Better than if vice President Harris became president? How would he even know that? Does he have access to an alternate universe or alternate timeline that the rest of us aren't living in? Things are playing out exactly as we warned them and the lies that Trump predicted about Biden in 2020? None of them came true. So I hope he enjoys finding out and may he find out more and more and more...

(2,083 posts)I said during the race last year that I feared a lot of people only remembered the stock market going up in his 1st term not all the chaos that happened and the total lack of leadership when it was needed during Covid. Everything this guy complained about trump was saying during the campaign he just didnt think hed actually do it.

"Well at least I didn't..." they'll say (cue racism and /or sexism)
How many tRump voters--either low Maga or high Maga-- just voted because everybody else they know did? A whole hell basket full of em!

(262 posts)that America is a woman hating pit. Most of the 1/3 population of the USA that is male will not vote for a woman as president. If you can fool yourself with the idea that losing your retirement is better than having Kamala as president, then this nation is lost. It isn't like DJT is a disappointment, it's that he is a total disaster. They know it and yet they tell themselves that nonsense.
Playingmantis
(408 posts)making fun of the idea of a woman as president.. He stamped his feel and pursed his lips as he pretended to be a woman president pouting about Nikita Khrushchev.. Really got a laugh out of the audience.. I cant find the video on line but that was the thinking then and apparently still is.
Better a convicted felon who kills US democracy than a competent woman especially if she is black!
Ya that is how they think...Fucking morons!!

(3,361 posts)That's what I would have asked. I'd want specifics - would your portfolio be in the shitter? If so, how? And be specific.
That seems to fluster red hatters ore than anything else - asking for specifics and not letting go until they either provide them (which they usually can't), try to deflect (which I won't allow), or just shut up.
