(2,941 posts)I don't think so. He doesn't have to really care whether his state gets any federal aid. He DOES have to please the ones for whom he works, his wealthy donors. And they want more tax cuts for themselves and less government aid for the 99%. Fortunately for sprinting senators like Josh, he knows that his electorate is easily misdirected and has a shorter memory than most one-celled lifeforms.

(51 posts)Hawley voted last year to cut FEMA funding so I call BS he wants FEMA. This reminds me he keeps saying they shouldnt cut Medicaid.
The voters expanded Medicaid a few years ago in Missouri via a constitutional amendment and that means if federal funds are cut to Medicaid then the state will be on the hook to make up the difference.
Repubs in Missouri recently got rid of the Capital Gains state tax which obviously helps wealthier folks. Repubs next goal is to remove the state income tax. They dont seem to care about their people, they care about being able to push through their regressive tax cuts.
I watch how Repubs vote not what they say since those things dont always agree.

(163,804 posts)trump is denying FEMA assistance to a number of red states.
Under President Donald Trump, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has turned down a request from a storm-ravaged state that narrowly voted for him three times.

https://www.rawstory.com/fema-north-carolina
Western North Carolina saw massive devastation last year from Hurricane Helene, which killed over 100 people and left the city of Asheville, along with a number of small communities in the Appalachian Mountains, struggling to pick up the pieces after flooding in areas that had hardly ever seen floods before. At the time, Trump supporters spread baseless conspiracy theories that the federal government was ignoring communities there, or only giving aid to Democratic areas, and Trump himself vowed to improve emergency management.
According to Rolling Stone, however, Trump's administration is now denying an extension of a commitment to pay the full amount for a vital portion of the recovery process.....
With Trump rejecting the state's request, he continued, "It will cost North Carolina taxpayers a lot more to clean up west through North Carolina, and debris removal is just one of the many categories of relief we need."
Since taking unified control of government, Republicans have increasingly toyed with the idea of making political demands of areas that require disaster relief. After wildfires destroyed several neighborhoods in Los Angeles months ago, for instance, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) repeatedly suggested Congress should impose new policy changes in California as a condition of receiving aid to rebuild.

Lets be honest the real headline here is the bribe!
HHS Secretary Noemi is suddenly expediting FEMA aid to Missouri. Why, you ask? Because they need Senator Hawleys vote on the so-called Big Beautiful Bill.
Before Trump approved FEMA relief, Hawley was a firm no. Who wants to bet thats about to change?

(190,832 posts)The major disaster declaration approvals allow Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas access to financial support through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Earlier this week Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem vowed to expedite Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoes request for disaster assistance, after being pressed on the issue by U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican.
