'Bring Carol home’: ICE snatches rural Missouri mom at immigration check-in

The Midwest Newsroom | By Kavahn Mansouri, Chad Davis
Published May 24, 2025 at 5:00 a.m. CDT

Carol Mayorga — a Kennett, Missouri woman — went to St. Louis last month for what she thought was a routine meeting with immigration officials to renew a work visa. Instead, they shackled her and are now trying to deport her to Hong Kong.

Carol Mayorga sat at a small table inside the Greene County Jail in Springfield, Missouri, on Wednesday morning. She appeared on screen via the jail’s video visitation service, wearing a muted green jumpsuit, her eyeglasses framed by her black hair.

Mayorga, whose legal name is Ming Li Hui, has been detained in jail under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody since late April. She’d traveled from Kennett, Missouri, her home for nearly two decades, to St. Louis for what she thought was a routine meeting to renew her employment authorization document.

The document, issued by the federal government, allows her to work legally in the U.S. and is set to expire in January 2026.

Originally from Hong Kong, Mayorga said she was used to the meetings. But when she arrived, things were anything but usual.

This is in deep red southern MO. The article doesn't reveal who the woman herself may have voted for, but most of the people interviewed were Trump supporters.

ETA: She wasn't eligible to vote. (too early in the morning to think of that)

1. IF we don't know who the woman voted for , I am not sure the leopard has made an appearance here.

10. While naturalized citizens have been ICEd

She was still fighting for naturalization as she came on a tourist visa and over stayed. That has been a serious issue for a long time now. But as her attorney says no one with a otherwise perfect record like her was getting deported until this mis-administration.

2. That's a bad assumption of whom she voted for considering her name is stated.

In addition, was she even eligible to vote?

I'm all for pointing out their hypocrisy but evidence here of this person as a Republican voter is weak, IMHO.

4. You're right, she isn't eligible to vote as she's not naturalized yet.

My point was the community, not her. They are up in arms as they didn't think their choice would affect someone like her.

I am very sorry for her and think she is being unjustly treated.

7. A curious statement by one of her supporters in town:

It was a man. He said 95% of the people in the restaurant where she worked were "supporters of Trump." "And I am too" the man said. "But this [the kidnapping without warrant or access to a lawyer] is wrong."

I am too? A supporter of Trump?

The guy evidently still supports the Leader even in the light of a woman beloved by the whole town is taken away in shackles for no god damned reason? A woman whose current work visa is good through 2026? Kidnapped and hustled out of town by goons from ICE? The same ICE that has been given free rein by Trump, who this guy still supports, to serve as police, judge, and jail warden -- all without warrants or even explanations to the victim's family? He still supports the man who did that to her?

It's not really necessary, is it, to say that the man in question is white and the woman being so horribly abused by Trump's goons is Chinese? So, while he sympathizes with the woman, he feels safely white, safe the same way millions of non-Jewish Germans felt in the '30s.

12. The frightening thing is the numbers of Trump voters

who are just like this guy, accepting of all manner of illegal depredations on citizens and legal residents who do not look like the white people who voted for Trump.

White makes Right, right? Next it will be "Christian White makes Right." Then "White Fundamentalist Christians who trust in Trump as God's New Chosen One makes right."

It's coming, almost ineluctably (I love that word) but surely inevitably if the Dems cannot concoct a strategy that will actually enlighten the dim bulb voters who put Trump on the throne for a second time.

8. Wonder how much all of these arrests and deportations will cost us in tax monies.

MAGA likes to pretend immigrants are takers so they ignore the fact that these people are a significant part of tax income.

They still support Orange Hitler despite having his mindlessly cruelty rubbed in their face.

Fuck the pastor double. "This isn't the type of person this should happen to"??!?!?? Which type of person *should* it happen to, according to your Jesus?
