General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI was SHOCKED when I entered my favorite neighborhood
liquor store today. I hadn't been by in probably two months. The shelves were more than half empty.
One of the owners told me that the specialized glass containers and the bottle stoppers were made overseas, and the tariffs were pricing the product out of the local market.
Another co-owner told me that five other nearby liquor stores are closing their doors due to the price increases.
I wonder how long it will take for the local magats to figure out why local businesses are closing.
BTW, I went grocery shopping yesterday for the first time in a week. I left with "sticker shock," even though I know prices had been rising.

(25,151 posts)My husband likes to make martinis on Saturday nights and i searched for the vodka he liked and there were only two cases. Usually there is a few rows of vodka. I told him today about it and he said hes going to buy a few more bottles today.

If you think things are bad now.......He just slapped a 50% Tariff on anything/everything coming from the EU because they wouldn't make a deal with him that was 100% in Trumps favor..........
Reminds me of a kid in our neighborhood who had the only ball. If we didn't play his way, or by his rules, he would just take his ball and go home........

(36,774 posts)Not the hoity-toity stuff that one buys rarely or one can easily afford to buy.
I go past the $160/fifth of gin and look at the bottom shelf for the $13/1.5 l. And after replacing the occasional bottle of vodka or gin or whiskey or whatever I decided to take advantage of the "buy two and get 10% off the price". So I buy duples of whatever and some sits on the shelf (which also counts as an investment of sorts, because if the price increases I may have foregone the interest on the $13 but don't get hit with the price increase).

(36,571 posts)I got a fifth of Bombay Gin for $19 (plus WA state's insane liquor taxes). That's a typical price.

(55,994 posts)Much depends on where stuff is made. Bombay Gin might be bottled in UK (I really don't know); European bottled stock is not subject to US tariffs on materials from China, and UK faces lower tariff taxes entering the US.
Lots of US booze depends on bottles made in Asia, I think.
It's also regional because shortages are rolling in a wave across US from west coast eastwards since trucks and intermediate warehouses also contain inventory. The west coast feels the impact more quickly from decreased port traffic.

I stopped drinking anything from Kentucky because of Mitch McConnel. I tried to get a Kentucky booze boycott going. It fell on deaf ears around here on DU.

(18,623 posts)until it actually impacts THEM.
When the guy two doors down is impacted - even though dude was a solid republican voter - they will say it is his fault, and have no sympathy. They will defend Trump until it is themselves that are hurting. Then they will find the guy two doors over the other direction, is looking at them the same way they looked at the first guy - it is their own fault.
None of these idiots will care until it hits them directly. This country will only have a chance to recover, when enough magats REALIZE they are hurting due to the actions of their erstwhile hero.
