WASHINGTON Senate Republicans pushed forward with a simple-majority vote late Wednesday to undo an electric vehicle mandate set by California, which Democrats and the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office said should be subject to the 60-vote filibuster rule.
The vote of 51-46 to proceed against objections turns a battle over clean energy policy into a high-stakes clash over the fate of the 60-vote filibuster rule, with consequences for the future of the Senate.
The vote bypassed the filibuster, which can be done in limited circumstances. Democrats had warned that if Republicans proceed in defiance of the Senate parliamentarian, who has sided with the GAO in the dispute, theyd be setting a precedent to nuke the legislative filibuster and turn the Senate into a majority-vote body.
Republicans just overruled the Parliamentarian, violated the plain text of the Congressional Review Act, changed the Clean Air Act, and broke the filibuster, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., said in a statement after the vote. Make no mistake, Democrats will not forget this, and Republicans will rue the day.

(9,003 posts)As long as we had Manchin and Sinema to deal with, we were not going to get rid of the filibuster.
And the smart and ACTUAL progressive-minded ones around here knew not to pull "a pox on all of you!" and slur Democrats as a whole for the positions of just a handful of senators on our side because that just makes it more difficult to eliminate the filibuster because it deludes those that don't know better into not voting because they are led to believe that Democrats are the problem when, in fact, it is just a handful of those that caucus with us that were/are the problem.
And when Democrats don't win elections, getting rid of the filibuster to pass progressive policy becomes more and more of a pipe dream.

(9,003 posts)There's no one around that hates -- yes, hates -- Republicans more than I do and wants to see them wiped out, up and down the ballot.
Contrast that with the person in your avatar that thinks Democrats are the same as Republicans (which results in disillusioned voters on the left sitting home, which helps Republicans win elections), thinks that the only political battle lines are strictly based on income (which results in diminishing the outright racism and bigotry of Republicans, which helps Republicans win elections), and is playing footsie with MAGA types because he is foolish enough to think they would actually ever vote for him (and they only pretend to express support because they recognize he has driven and continues to drive a wedge among those on the left, which helps Republicans win elections).

(9,003 posts)We were still dealing with Manchin/Sinema and presumably at least a few others that would have been hesitant (if not ultimately resistant as well).
