Palestinian minister reports 29 starvation-related deaths among Gazan children, elderly

GENEVA, May 22 (Reuters) - The Palestinian health minister said on Thursday that 29 children and elderly people had died from starvation-related deaths in Gaza in recent days and that many thousands more were at risk.

Food aid is expected to start reaching Gazans on Thursday after Israel let the first trucks through following an 11-week blockade, but Palestinian and aid officials say it is just a fraction of what is needed.

Asked to react to earlier comments by the U.N. aid chief to the BBC that 14,000 babies could die without aid, he said: "The number 14,000 is very realistic may be even underestimating (the scale)."

Israel imposed the blockade on all supplies in March, saying Hamas was seizing deliveries for its fighters - a charge the group denies. Earlier this month, a global hunger monitor said that half a million people in the Gaza Strip face starvation.

Israel has few other tools to coerce Hamas. Violence and deprivation, that's it, and sieges hurt civilians vastly more.

Israel is out of ideas to get the hostages back. When Hamas is willing to let the population starve to death rather than compromise on a ceasefire, what alternatives exist?

Just end the siege with Hamas in power and hostages still held?

Israeli is a nuclear-armed nation. They could kill every Gazan. They could also force them into Egypt (Egypt would object violently).

Israel's govt has loose cannons named Ben-Gvir and Smotrich; their apocalyptic hyperbole isn't the IDF's strategy. Israel won't "ethnically cleanse" 2 million people.

"Ethnic cleansing" isn't the right term, anyway, because the population of Gaza is 100% Arab. There's no "out group" to purge.
