Not sure about you, but Ashli Babbitts family getting $5M, while Brian Sicknicks family along with the 140 other police officers injured or died defending the Capital against domestic terrorists like Ashli, get nothing - makes me sick.

Can't think of a better slogan for an administration whose leader claims not to know whether he is required to abide by his oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Or his vile "Att'y General" who echoed his treasonous statement. Or his very stupid DHS head who actually claimed that "habeas corpus" means the president can arrest, incarcerate, and deport anyone he thinks looks suspicious.

(3,929 posts)THIS is a big one and my heart is beating way too fast. I saw my cardiologist yesterday and I'll bet he would have a different diagnosis if he saw me now!!! I just poured some wine which I know is not a good thing if one is 85, but I,really need it!!!

(40,492 posts)Trump was the cause of her death. I call it felony murder. A killing that happens in the commission of a felony.

No?
You appear to be correct.

(1,959 posts)Ashli Babbitt was a disgusting, disturbed person. Given her violent personal history it was unsurprising that she ended up taking a bullet. That her family is getting a lucrative payout when the heroes of that day got nothing is one the worst most Kafkaesque outcomes weve yet witnessed.

is that a large windfall of money tends to really f**k up people's lives. One study showed that 70% of lottery winners ended up going bankrupt within a few years.
Given their ideology and behavior, this is going to create family feuds, they will become targets for all sorts of people trying to take their money, and other fun experiences.
If any of them have any old debt, they can expect extreme attempts to get that money.
I would predict that they will regret this in the long run but it is doubtful any of them will recognize once they are bankrupt that it was their own fault!

(5,595 posts)and I certainly have not kept up with the literature in this area. That being said, I don't think one can legitimately compare lottery winners in Germany and Sweden to lottery winners in the US - given that those countries already have higher rates of happiness than we have. I'd like to see a study of US lottery winners.

(2,890 posts)I am sorry for whatever torment her soul had to go through to become so twisted -- and so enamored of Trump and his fascism -- that she would physically attack the U.S. Congress.
Unlike most of the traitors who attacked the Capitol that day-- I said "most" not "all" -- she was a veteran who had served her country.
I wish someone had gotten to her before she got involved with Trump's "wild party" on January 6, 2020.
But there's no goddam way in hell her family deserves a payoff for her death. Period.

(19,335 posts)Maybe, maybe not. The media has chosen to primarily show photos of her sweetly smiling. If you've seen some of her YouTube rant videos, it's more like mean and snarling.
So yeah. She died because of Trump, and no, her family should not be rewarded for her acts. It wasn't "wrongful death." She was a domestic terrorist. Period.

(14,311 posts)(NYT) "The Trump administration has agreed to pay approximately $5 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer during the January 6th, 2021, riot. The settlement resolves a lawsuit that originally sought $30 million. The payment will be made by the U.S. Department of Justice, which is responsible for settling the claim."

(11 posts)actually, my belief is that the police should have handled it the same as a BLM event, but with the addition of the Vice-President and the Speaker of the House both being present and in danger, there should have been more dead insurrectionists
