Covid-19 cases reported in Thailand spiked to 33,030 last week, with at least 6,000 cases in Bangkok, according to the Department of Disease Control.
The department reported 33,030 Covid-19 cases from May 11-17, double the number of more than 16,000 in the previous week.
Of those, 1,918 were hospitalised, while two were reported dead from the disease in Sukhothai and Kanchanaburi.
Bangkok had the highest number of patients at 6,290, followed by Chon Buri (2,573), Rayong (1,680), Nonthaburi (1,482), and Samut Prakan (1,442). Most of the infections were in those aged between 30 and 39.

(328 posts)Ive been to Bangkok. Very densely populated. The city has 10 million + so those published numbers seem very low. Less than seven thousand cases in a city of 10,000,000. Obviously things can scale quickly in cities of dense populations. But you would never have this level of reaction in the states.

(328 posts)Weve had people with it in the office. Most just work from home two days or one day off. They say the strain is very much weakened versus the original. We had flu go through our office over winter and that resulted in two people out for at least 4 days.

(18,262 posts)Sniff, like a runny nose and the whole crowd reached in their pockets and pulled out their masks.
Melon
(328 posts)They will mask quickly if they are sick. But even in Asia, just wearing a mask around is not by any means the norm.
Even the Thailand announcement. Less than 7,000 cases out of 10 million people. Its really not a blip. You will see all kinds of diseases in Asia plus people spitting and such. This would be the least of my concerns there.

Do not make light of this. It is still serious.. and they had all the shots.
Take some Vitamin D, get plenty of sleep and some zinc lozenges.

(5,084 posts)That is an extremely high rate of hospitalization. The Hospitalization rate in the US from May 2020 thru April 2021 was just of 1.0%. This current rate in Thailand is 5.8%. That implies that there are currently an elevated rate of more severe cases, at least in Thailand. That may or may not be cause for concern.

(5,082 posts)Or rather, that's been the variant that's been dominant since late last summer but has seen rapid rises in Asia and Europe in the last few weeks.
There's also better immune response. I'm pretty sure I had this in April - experienced it as a head (nose) cold with lingering lung effects, like the first time I had Omicron. I'm a runner and two weeks out I had trouble doing 1.5 miles! (My usual runs are 4 to 8 miles). I did not test, though, so it could have been anything.

(137 posts)It shouldnt be a concern for most people unless its a novel strain.
I wouldnt be surprised if most of us have caught COVID at some point, without even knowing it.

(24,358 posts)who volunteers at a local food pantry. I didn't see her there a few months ago and asked if she still volunteered there and she said "no" because she caught Covid from a homeless person and was very sick. Since you are contagious for a few days before symptoms, she could have had it and spread it.
I have my yearly Medicare physical next month so I can get my shot then.

(812 posts)If she was contagious before she was sick and we know that the shot doesn't stop transmission, then what would have been the solution there?
