2. Unless you've dealt with cancer, the labels are confusing.

Someone on DU yesterday said he had stage 5 cancer. He doesn't have that either. He has a Gleason score of 9, which puts him in the grade group 5.

Stage has to do with size and spread.
Grade has to do with what the cells look like.
Most cancers/institutions use 4 stages and either 3 or 4 grades.
Prostate cancer uses 5 grades based on an evaluation of the two most prevalent appearances in the sample - giving individual stages up to 5 for each of two cell types, which are added together to create the Gleason score - which is use for a grade group.

Trump is really dumb - I'm not disputing that. But getting confused about the multiple ways in which cancer is labeled has nothing to do with being dumb. It's confusing even for people who have different kinds of cancers - and even for people with the same kind of cancer visiting different institutions which use a different grading scale.

that goes everywhere he does. And he's the President, who should know what he's saying when he says it. He doesn't have an excuse to get stuff like that wrong.

10. Knowing the personal health status of Joe Biden is not part of his job responsibilities.

There's a lot of stuff he should know what he is talking about before speaking - like whether Abrego Garcia literally has MS-13 tattooed on his hand, whether he is entitled to due process, how tariffs operate, etc. But knowing the precise language to describe Biden's cancer is not one of them.

Between stage and grade?

What a Gleason score is?

How that score of 9 relates to the 5 that is tied to Biden's diagnosis?

Why Biden's number is 5, rather than a maximum of either 3 or 4 (like other cancers)

I'm living with two cancers, and I had to look out up, because prostate cancer had it's own language and grading scale.

19. Biden's cancer is grade group 5 (not stage 5).

There are four stages of cancer.

"For most cancers, the stage is a Roman numeral from I (1) to IV (4). Stage I cancers are less advanced and often have a better prognosis (outlook). Higher stage cancers typically have spread farther (or have other concerning features), so they might require more intense (or different kinds of) treatment. Sometimes stages are subdivided as well, using capital letters (for example, stage III might be subdivided into stages IIIA and IIIB)."

My point is that (1) most people don't know the difference between stages and grades, (2) most people don't know the range within stages (I to IV) or grades (0-3, 0-4, or - in the case of prostate cancer, 0-5 for individual grades which make up the Gleason score and grade groups - two grades added together, then placed into 5 grade groups. Grade group 5 consists of grade 4 (most prevalent cell grade)+5 (second most prevalent cell grade), 5+4 (the reverse, or 5+5) or (3) most people don't know that the grading for prostate cancer is unique.

Trump is a total idiot. But not knowing the intricacies of cancer staging and grading - especially in a cancer which is graded differently than other cancers - is not evidence that he is a total idiot. It is simply evidence that it is a confusing system.

Biden is stage IVB - distant metastasis, with - or without - nearby lymph node involvement.

Not funny, really. but Junior claimed Joe Biden had 5-stage cancer. Now, we're up to 9.

Always inflating the numbers for the Agent Orange clan.

5 is the grade group. Both numbers were included in yesterday's announcement. Not inflation - just confusion about a cancer labeling system that is unique to prostate cancer.

I had heard of the Gleason scale and Biden's number coming in at 9. Not good. However, Trump's proclamation about Stage 9 cancer sounded bizarre.

Thanks for the heads up.
