I know why! There's nobody left in government to look for bird flu so we'll all die not just the birds, thanks to Krasnov.

(109,933 posts)collecting samples/testing continuously and are seeing some drop in positivity in Peromyscus species rodents (a common carrier believed to be the source to Colorado dairies--among the most impacted in the country) and other species, including a wide variety of birds and water fowl. Likewise, a decrease in issues in Colorado poultry facilities (and yes we actually DO have some). Likewise hospital ERs have included Avian Flu testing on some of their respiratory panels along with RSV, Type A & B influenza, COVID-19, Rhinovirus, and Strep. Not everyone gets that added screen for Avian FLu (expensive) but enough random samples to be significant and CO Public Health is not reporting positivities recently (nor in dairy or poultry workers.
Nor are we seeing bird die-offs right now.
The Fall may be a different situation but there is a drop-off in risk/spread right now.

(5,007 posts)It is a seasonal ailment and can be affected by migration patterns. Plus, once detected, the poultry operations began to take corrective measures.
From Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine:
The current outbreak in North America began in Nov. 2021, when the virus was introduced either via trans-Atlantic migration or transmission of the virus in Iceland or Greenland from Europe, where it had already been circulating for several years. Once in North America, it spread rapidly through both wild birds and poultry, causing significant losses to the poultry industry.

(75,738 posts)I had not read about cats being infected.
Similar surveillance is urgently needed among domestic cats, said Kristen Coleman, a researcher at the University of Maryland at College Park who studies emerging animal diseases. She recently released a paper reviewing bird flu in infections in cats between 2004 and 2024.
Barn cats that died after drinking raw milk were one of the first signs that dairy cows were becoming infected with bird flu in 2024. Since then, the Agriculture Department has confirmed more than 120 domestic cats infected with the virus across the U.S.
Infections have mostly been found in cats that died. Less is known about milder infections, whether cats can recover from bird flu or whether the virus can spill over into people.
Coleman has been collecting blood samples from cats across the U.S. to see if they have evidence of previous exposure to the virus. But the process is slow and research funding is uncertain.
