Walmart, the largest retailer in the nation, has announced it is raising prices because of President Donald Trumps tariffs.
The retail giant said on Thursday that it may absorb some of the import taxes, but it is still raising prices to offset increased costs resulting from Trumps ill-advised trade war.
The tariffs will result in higher prices, CEO Doug McMillon said bluntly on an earnings call.
We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible but given the magnitude of the tariffs, even at the reduced levels announced this week, we arent able to absorb all the pressure given the reality of narrow retail margins, McMillon said.
The announcement comes days after the Trump administration announced that it would be lowering its tariff rate against China from 145 percent to 30 percent an improvement no doubt but still a major tax on common consumer goods. China and, because of retaliatory tariffs, the United States has been hit the hardest by Trumps trade war, and the president still has tariffs in place on several other nations, despite pausing the initial far-steeper import taxes he announced in early April. Trump has simultaneously warned that Americans might have to cut back on certain goods as prices rise, while claiming the tariffs will make everyone richer than they could ever imagine.

(12 posts)This is exactly what many economists and progressives warned about when Trump launched his reckless trade war working families are paying the price, not the foreign governments he claimed to be punishing. Tariffs are essentially taxes on consumers, and now were seeing that cost trickle down in a very real way. Walmart raising prices isnt just a corporate decision; its a symptom of failed economic policy.
Whats worse is the gaslighting. Trump says these tariffs will make Americans richer, yet even his supporters at major corporations are saying otherwise. Walmart isnt some fringe leftist group its one of the biggest beneficiaries of conservative economic policies, and even they cant sugarcoat the damage.
This isn't about America "winning" it's about a president using economic nationalism as a campaign talking point, with no coherent strategy and no concern for the average person. Lowering the tariff from 145% to 30% isnt some generous favor; its still a massive, unnecessary tax burden on American consumers. If we want an economy that actually supports people instead of political egos, we need to return to evidence-based trade policy and international cooperation not isolationist bluster.

(22,886 posts)My company has been hit hard by the tariffs. We get large bonuses every year and have meetings and email updates on how we're performing on our metrics that go into how much our bonus will be. Every single one of these messages or meetings has talked about tariffs in terms of, 'We're monitoring it and taking some actions to be more efficient, and so far the tariffs haven't hurt our performance towards these metrics..." So we all know what that means, the tariffs are being set up as the reason we will get a smaller bonus or no bonus at all.
Last year, my group's bonus was about 22% of our salary. So they're a big deal and people rely on them. If the tariffs cost us our bonus, I am sure the company will be fairly clear about that. And if that happens, every MAGA I work with is going to hear from me, "Hope those tariffs were great for you, because they just cost you and me 22% of our salaries."

(65,007 posts)I mean, WalMart sells a lot of shit. Is this vague statement so that they can raise prices on literally anything and just blame tariffs, or is it because they literally don't know, just (some, maybe all) prices are to be raised?
What a stupid, vague bit of "journalism" here.
Regardless, 77 million uberchuds voted for this shit.
