can we finally listen to George Carlin and realize we don't have choices? We have owners. And the ruling class around the world controls everything.

(24,212 posts)But I think his rant was more about both parties being owned by the rich, when that's not the case anymore. The illusion of choice now is about control of the media and of social media. The owners of this country unleashed a terrible power on its citizens and now they can get anyone elected by using this power. I think Trump's wholly being unfit for office was a demonstration of this power. If they got a Russian puppet, rapist, idiot, who tried to overthrow our democracy 4 years ago elected, they can get literally enyone in office. The illusion of choice isn't really about Dem vs Republican anymore, it's about the fact the ruling class can get enough people to support literally anyone they want now.
Musk is a troll, but he's not an idiot and he's talented at developing and using new technology and at finding the right experts to do it all for him. When he got involved in the Trump campaign, it spelled trouble to me.
So bsically now, thy have control over the media, both mainstream, social, and alternative. They know they can't get all the people to believe nonsense, but they know they can get enough of the people to believe the nonsense that they can do whatever they want going forward. And I fear that DU is going to be one of the last refuges left where truth survives.
Joe Biden built the best economy in American history and the oligarchs convinced enough people that the economy was awful. I think that goes both ways, Trump will destroy the economy, inflation and unemployment will explode, wages will fall, and the media blitz will still be successful in getting the majority of Americans to think things are great. "Sure, I lost my job and my house, and my car, but things are just better everywhere." Wait for those diner interviews.
And the polls on the economy under Biden were stark depending on how the questions were asked. "How would you rate the economy?" got bad responses. "Are you better off...?" got bad responses. But some polls would ask questions like, "Are you doing better in your own personal finances?" Those questions got overwhelming responses of positive. So the majority of people were doing better in their own finances, but thought they were not better off because the economy was bad.
